Questions/Advice Thread
(Anonymous) 2020-08-22 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)Re: Questions/Advice Thread
(Anonymous) 2020-08-22 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)Is there an ELI5 for Alpha/Beta/Omega dynamics? Where did it start from?
For the explicit stories, there is thigh fucking which ok I get, but it's a new concept for me. When did that start appearing?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-22 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)Well I'll try explaining it like you're 18 (or the age of consent where you are) XD XD XD
I think I read once that A/B/O fics existed before Supernatural, but the general consensus is that it really hit big in the notoriously dark Supernatural kink memes back in the day. The usual dynamics are that there are Alphas who are domineering, in charge, etc, and Omegas who are essentially subs to the Alphas. There are usually heats and Omegas usually go into a Pon Farr-like state of must-fuck-now where they need an Alpha.
Betas tend to be everyone else who is not an Alpha or an Omega.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-23 11:18 am (UTC)(link)Someone already gave you the breakdown of alphas, betas, and omegas. Heat sex is a major feature of a/b/o. Omegas have self-lubricating butts and alphas have very large dicks and their dicks have "knots" that expand during sex, eventually locking them together with the omega. Generally high volumes of come are involved.
Often a/b/o social dynamics can play out like extreme versions of real world social dynamics, with omegas being treated like second class citizens or property by society, and especially by alphas. But not all a/b/o fics go this route. Also, some fics kink on the "big, powerful, controlling, jealous, animalistic alpha & small, gentle, submissive omega" dynamic, while others deconstruct it or subvert it.
Some a/b/o is more animalistic and puts more emphasis on the so-called animalistic elements of alphas and omegas. But a lot of a/b/o isn't particularly animalistic, besides heats and knots.
The most notable thing about a/b/o, really, is that it's extremely customizable. Everybody writes their version of a/b/o slightly differently. I think alphas, omegas, and heats are probably the only elements that an a/b/o fic has to have to embody the trope, and how the author chooses to depict alphas, omegas, and heats is largely up to them.
I read a lot (A LOT) of a/b/o fic in the Sherock fandom, and a lot of it was really good. I've since moved on to other fandoms, and haven't really been enjoying the a/b/o in these other fandoms much. So I would say a/b/o varies a lot from fic to fic, and also it can vary quite a bit from fandom to fandom, too.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-22 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)I'm trying to shop in a better way, and I found a rug made from recycled cotton from a retailer that seem to be making concerted effort to push in a more sustainable direction. Only problem is it's white and we have a dog. How much of a mistake is it to buy this??

(Anonymous) 2020-08-23 12:48 am (UTC)(link)I think you'd be better off studying dialogue you've enjoyed reading rather than real conversations. In fiction we do away with a lot of the boring parts of everyday conversation.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-23 02:24 am (UTC)(link)I don't think recording real life conversations will be of much help because in fiction, dialogue has to serve a purpose. You don't have paragraphs of pointless chit chat in fiction, because that's dull as dishwaster and your audience will be bored. Written dialogue needs to move the story forward, either by aiding in plot development or characterization.
