I know everyone should be allowed to like what they like, and whatever makes you happy and doesn't hurt anyone is okay. Even so, I find the whole 'comfort character' trend incredibly cringeworthy, especially since most of the people I see posting about it are grown adults. It just feels like a weird level of regression happening where actual adults are talking about 'what if my uwu comfort character Sasuke Uchiha gave me a kiss.' I'm very close to blocking people I formerly enjoyed talking to because if I wanted to follow someone who posted all day about fictional anime characters marrying them I would be following more fourteen year olds.

What is UWU?

It's an emoji. The two u's are closed eyes and the w is a mouth, making the same expression as in the :3 emoji. Nobody uses it anymore except ironically, to make fun of people whose aesthetic is "soft."

What is a "soft aesthetic"?

Agreed a hundred times over. I actually find that behaviour from people I know to be full grown adults deeply disturbing.

I don't think it's any worse than when fans talk about characters they want to fuck and share their sexual fantasies about them. Which is to say, the fact that they get shared publicly on the internet for everyone to read is a bit "cringe," but having those kinds of thoughts about characters is just a normal part of being a fan of something. I've had "comfort characters" in my head for longer than the concept had a name, and imagining them comforting me has made certain difficulties easier for me. (Like, example, I hate needles so I've always had a fear of getting shots at the doctor, and when I realized I could imagine a character who's canonically good at comforting people being there and telling me I was going to be fine made getting shots much easier. In fact, outwardly I was able to act much more "adult" about getting shots because in my head I was having a "childish" fantasy of being comforted by a character.) I don't talk about it in detail on my public fandom accounts, but doing it isn't immature, weird, or bad at all. Whatever helps you cope, helps.

I remember being a kid and being afraid of shots and some nurse trying to tell me this one TV character wouldn't be afraid and that didn't help much because it was a character I didn't particularly like anyway. shrug

Yeah, I mean, it's better when you choose the characters yourself. That's the point.

Omg, I don’t really have an opinion either way on the secret itself but I do this exact thing with shots too (I kind of have a needle phobia). It just helps a lot fsr to imagine certain characters are with me or doing the injection for me. Maybe it’s a little silly, but if it helps me stay calm when I have to get a ton of shots in a row, why not, you know?
