One of the neglected areas of modern media is, in my opinion, well-written heterosexual romance. Obviously controversial because, hey, there's tonnes of hetero romance out there. It's just most of it is pasted on hetero romance usually between two actors who have absolutely zero chemistry.

In my idealised world, media would spend less time throwing uninteresting hetero characters into bed together just because it's expected, and instead focus on good character and plot writing in general - with an equal mix of romantic and aromantic relationships between all genders and non-binary.

I totally get this. Just because there are tons of het romances doesn't mean there are tons of GOOD ones.

I quite agree. The assumption that two conventionally attractive people of broadly the same age existing in the same space is all that's needed to establish a romance... It's just not cutting it anymore! At least convince me these people *like* each other, damnit!

absolutely. i love a good romance, and my issue with a good chunk of het-romances isn't that they're het, but that a majority of them are so poorly developed and written. give me a het-ship given as much care as the rest of the story and i will love it, it's not hard to do but so many movies and shows just don't seem to understand this.

Yes, this can be controversial even though it shouldn't be. So many "romances" we see can get really toxic or the UST goes past the sell by date (Castle) and people lose interest and once couples do get together, writers don't know what to do with them other than fake drama. Then it bleeds over into books and "insta-romance." I'm so tired.

I try to make it my goal as an author to show healthy relationships. So, the main characters in my one series is super slow burn romance which hasn't even gotten to the "will you date me?" yet. Let the romance percolate! (I think that's the word I want. Steep. Simmer. Stew.)

Monsters as pets is probably my absolute favorite fantasy trope. Dragons, yes. Wolves, sure. Just anything big and scary but is somehow friendly and the perfect pet at least to this one person. I don't want to see it in the real world, but in a fantasy I want it every time.

I don't know that I've ever shipped a pairing from a single movie before. I mostly ship from books, tv and sometimes from movie series. It takes time for a romance to be believable for me. I need to see chemistry develop. Even with non-canon romances I need the characters to interact enough.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-22 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
The only movie pairing that hit it big for me was Eames/Arthur from Inception. I think that movie had just the right level of chemistry with obvious history in addition to an obviously interesting unexplored universe. Even then though, once you've read a certain number of Inception fics, you've kind of read them all.

IDEK what media people get into shipping these days

Apparently mostly anime, video games, cartoons, and kpop bands it feels like?

I've been lurking in online fandom for over 25 years. For at least the first 15 I literally only lurked and read fic and never posted anything, and only started commenting anonymously within the last ten. This year I made an Ao3 account so I could read locked fics during lockdown. I hope it doesn't take me another 15-25 years to post some fic there!

I've had other fandoms I dipped a toe in, but in over a quarter century, I've only really dove into two fandoms, and I only got into the second fandom because so many fans from my first fandom were posting about it.

There's other media I like and read fic for, but nothing else I've written more than a page or so of fic for, or tried to cosplay from, or, well, spent years at a time obsessing over.

I'm not being facetious when I say I read kink fic as art. Hardcore and deviant stories have taken me farther into the depths of imagination and self-reflection than even the most well written science fiction novels. Every now and then I'll stumble across a fic with a kink I didn't know existed and the roller coaster of emotion felt while plowing through paragraph after paragraph of mindbending sexuality can be likened to getting stoned almost.

I'm always impressed when multiple primary and secondary characters die all at once in the same scene. It takes balls as a writer to do such a thing and a rare talent to do it well.

Cannibalism is treated as one of the cardinal taboos but clearly more of the population is okay with it than lets on, as evident by the popularity of vampires, zombies, werewolves, et cetera. It's still (former/half) humans eating humans but they're deemed okay because they're specifically labeled as 'monsters' as opposed to 'human'; the possible political and social commentary of such a distinction keeps me up at night. It isn't just cannibalism that plays this card, but a wide array of other subjects too, and I wonder how much of 'taboo' in general is arguably a case of bad PR. Heh.

I love when a prequel's heart of gold protagonist loses their mind and becomes the antagonist in a sequel. It's one of my favorite narrative devices and I can't get enough of it. Just inject that good shit directly into my veins.

I know everyone should be allowed to like what they like, and whatever makes you happy and doesn't hurt anyone is okay. Even so, I find the whole 'comfort character' trend incredibly cringeworthy, especially since most of the people I see posting about it are grown adults. It just feels like a weird level of regression happening where actual adults are talking about 'what if my uwu comfort character Sasuke Uchiha gave me a kiss.' I'm very close to blocking people I formerly enjoyed talking to because if I wanted to follow someone who posted all day about fictional anime characters marrying them I would be following more fourteen year olds.

A friend from a previous fandom of mine just got into a new fandom and has changed their whole aesthetic due to their favorite characters from that series. They're constantly posting pictures of clothes/furniture/etc and talking about how this is so them and how they want to decorate their whole house in this style. That they're doing this doesn't bother me and it's nice to see them having fun with the new fandom.

The problem is the things that are part of their new aesthetic are also things I really like. We share a bunch of mutuals and now I feel like I can't post any of the things that I find online or buy which match this friend's aesthetic because it will look like I'm trying to copy them. (I'm aware this is not my friend's fault, it's just a bummer.)

I miss Gillian Flynn's novels. I get that writing screenplays is probably a more lucrative job, but still.
