But he wasn't a protagonist...this has flavors of Nurse Ratched anon.

I’m not familiar with the source material, so was he a bad guy or a “good” guy that wasn’t actually good? I wonder if maybe OP was trying to say that the source material would’ve been more interesting from his POV.

Straight up villain without a drop of moral ambiguity.

dictator. no one in that book is particularly compelling so, sure, it would have been interesting to see the evil regime's side of the story. don't see what is complex about him, but katniss is your average emotionally stunted heroine so maybe in comparison...

In the prequel he’s an antihero.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-24 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
A spin off book was just released about him being the protagonist.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-25 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
You clearly haven’t read the latest book.

nor will I.

Katniss is literally the worst character in the entire trilogy, possibly one of the worst characters of all time.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-24 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
How so? I am curious, I have no familiarity with the source but I'm interested in what makes her so bad

(Anonymous) 2020-08-24 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
She was so dull she sucked the life out of every scene she was in.

Eh, to each their own, Anon.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-25 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think she is terrible. But that first person present tense did her no favors. She comes off more like a camera than a character in a lot of her book scenes.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-25 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Good lord, that sure is a take.

She’s not really the kind of character I vibe with; I personally find her a little bland. But I think she’s a solid character. She’s consistent, her demeanor is well defined, it’s clear how her circumstances have shaped who she is, and her motives are understandable.

He's an interesting antagonist... I don't know about him as a protagonist.

I guess if he believed enough in what he was doing he could convince himself he was in the right, and maybe the other 1% who benefit from essentially enslaving the rest of the population, but I think to most people in that world he's definitely a villain.

I think OP might be referring to the new book where he is the protagonist? I think. I didn't read it.

oh shit right that came out! im surprised someone read it

OP.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-25 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Correct.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-24 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn’t read the book where he’s the protagonist but I’ll say in the original trilogy he was one of the more interesting characters and Katniss had the appeal of wet bread.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-25 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Can't agree because I don't like villain protagonists or antiheroes. He was a more interesting character than Katniss in the original trilogy, but then in the prequel when he was the protagonist I just hated the book altogether. Not that I loved the original trilogy. First person in general is not for me. But he should not be the star of anything.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-25 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
He shouldn't be the star because you don't like him and his character type?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-25 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
I liked him in the movies more than the book trilogy. I should read the prequel.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-25 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
He is definitely an interesting antagonist in the original series.

I refuse to read the prequel. Of all the ways that universe could have been expanded, she picked the worst possible one.

ia, and I really liked The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
