I totally get that, OP. I didn't mind The Untamed flashback as much as I thought I would (though it really threw me for a loop initially) but in other dramas, I've really hated the tangential plot that involves immortals or gods and their mortal trials. It seems to be part of the genre, though. I don't think that makes it "good", it's just... something people expect? I don't know.
