101: Yeah, I never got into that fandom because I dislike the Seishirou/Subaru pairing so much. Or, well, more specifically, the way they're viewed by most of the fandom.

130: Why not just stay in the 8059 parts of fandom? From what I've seen, they're a pretty large part. There are other ways to interpret Gokudera's feelings for Tsuna, you know.

139: I always wonder about this. Isn't the definition of being bisexual simply that you're able to feel attraction to both sexes?

143: I always thought they'd be a great match; sadly there were never much fic.

161: It's complicated, no question about it. But the Nazis weren't monsters, most of them, just regular people (and I find this the most chilling part, actually; it shows what regular people can do if they allow themselves to be governed by fear and hatred).

167: If you look anywhere but the online part of fandom, I think you'll find your approach much more common. In fact, most people watching your shows will probably never even have had a thought of considering differently than what the canon most evidently provides.

175. Of course I never watch the U.S. dub, which I see that you meant; I'm Swedish. We don't dub (except for the kiddies, and then we do an awful, awful job of it). Why should I watch yours?

As a Norwegian (and as such brought up with an excellent dubbing industry even though we only dub for the "kiddies", too), I own more anime in English than I really should for the simple reason that a good dub gives me much more than a sub ever could.

Well, ours is awful, and people here simply abhor dubbing once they grow a bit older than, say, ten or so.

As for getting more out of a dub, it's all about getting used to the sound of the Japanese language. You don't have to speak it to understand the feeling behind the words.

There's also the change in personality of a character when the voice is changed; no matter how good the dub is, the feeling and personality of the character will change in different degrees. If you prefer the U.S. version, it's your right, but I really recommend you to try the Japanese voices for a while, just to get a good comparison. And I mean give it a real chance - don't expect it to be weird and alien, but listen with an open mind, and try it for a few weeks.

Well, people simply abhor dubbing here, too, because competence at English is the ultimate sign of being young, hip and international. See also the game reviewer who complained about the use of Norwegian movie titles in a family quiz game (cool folks know movies by their English titles, I suppose), and all the people who bitch about how much the Norwegian translation of the Harry Potter books suck because the names were changed (so that the target group could get the puns), nevermind having a prose that flows better than Rowling's does in English.

There are such things as puns, turns of phrase, implisiet associations and connotations. They often rely as much on the way they are spoken as the actual meanings of the words alone, and these will rarely carry through to somebody unfamiliar with the language in question. Knowing the sound of Japanese enough to tell when somebody is being sarcastic does not help me recognize the actual emphasis of the mockery as long as my Japanese vocabulary is limited to some twenty words. And where subs are expected to be faithful to the original script, dubs always require a degree of re-writing and as such allow for a more liberal translation, and more familiar ways to express the same sentinents to non-Japanese speakers.

The inevitable difference in character interpretation on the part of the actors boils down to a matter of preference, but I dare say that as long as the translation is good, the dubbed version can't be claimed to be inferior simply because it is secondary (you know what they say about the Cowboy Bebop dub, right? Astrid Lindgren claimed to like her books better in their Norwegian translation). And it's not that I don't watch things in Japanese - I'm as dirty a fansub downloader as the rest of us. But if I like the show enough to get DVDs, chances are that the decision rides on the dub. If Funimation could make dubs that were truly good and not merely tolerable, there's not a doubt in my mind that I would have bought xxxHolic on DVD. But the show is awkward and forgettable in English, and I have no moral obligations to support the US anime industry just because.

Yeah, I agree; some things are always lost in translation. However, from what I've seen of the official English translations of manga (which they put more effort into than anime, IIRC), the translators rarely, if ever, actually try to translate those things, or do it wrongly. The Swedish translation of the One Piece manga is amazing, for example, because the translator really works at the jokes and quirks (which there are a lot more of than in any other manga I've ever read) so that it sounds good in Swedish. But it's still text, and I'd rather compare it to subtitles than dubbing. Also, it's not like that sort of joke and turns of phrases make up the entire dialogue; in some anime it's fairly non-existent. Not to mention that a good translator should use the subtitles to work them in in any case.

Once you're used to hearing the language, you do hear the shifts in tone and emphasis that convey the feeling. My own mother, who doesn't speak Japanese, loves the Ghibli films and refuse to watch them in anything but the original language. She says the language is part of the feeling, that it adds another layer to the film. She even picked up a couple of words without even trying!

No, of course not. What I meant is that it will inevitably be different. I always want to see it in the original form, as the dub is edited by people not involved in the creation of the work, which might lead them to get the characterisation wrong.

...although Kroenen, the guy in the mask and the leather? I'm not sure how much of an actual Nazi he was, but he was supposedly Hitler's top assassin and a definitely brutal invididual even before the whole undeadification thing. His wiki bio says he even did a stint at Auschwitz, although it seems very out of character for someone who prefers to work alone. That's a bit harder to reconcile with.

Yeah, I can understand that. I think acknowledging his terrible side and not trying to excuse him, making as balanced and true portrayal as possible is the only thing you can do.

I'm probably kind of giving myself away here, being one of the few who's actually written fic for them. They seriously need more fic-- compared to the amount everyone else gets it's kind of pathetic.

I only sort of dipped my toes in the PoT fandom (sweeped it for fic and moved on, sort of), and probably missed a lot. Since I'm a freak whose favourite pairing is Akaya/Ryoma, I never really got involved, unfortunately. If I'd been more of a fic-writer I'd probably stayed and written something.
