For example, in fanfic, the original characters, the interactions, the world, the setting, the tone, the plot that all this is based off of, and the vested interest in the topic by readers - was done for you by someone else. Instantly. For free. A writer of original works would have to do all that on their own. Same goes for art, costumes, music, vids, whatever you want.

This is probably the main reason, I'd guess. Fic writers do still have to come up with a plot and dialog and other details for a story, but generally speaking, most of the hard work has already been done and basically all they're doing is writing new stories for that world.

Right. I'm not saying original writing is better - lots of original writing is total crap honestly. Or that fanfic is worse - I have read brilliant fanfic. But fanfic lets you skip a ton of the work that should go into a good original story and to be frank I enjoy that part, personally.

It's valid that fanfic is technically writing in that you are in fact putting words upon a page, but being baffled that people respect original writing more than fanfic writing is odd to me. They're not the same thing? Fanfic is about half of the whole process. Like 10% of the process, if you're throwing characters into a PWP sex scene.

There's nothing wrong with acknowledging it's not the same!

Yep, this exactly.
