Sprinkles was old and had a lot of ailments, and Angela asked Dwight to give the cat her medicine but he tried to euthanize her instead.

Dwight: OK, when a farmer sees an animal that is in pain, that has no quality of life, that has no utility, a farmer does what city folk don’t have the stomach to do.
Angela: You did kill her!?
Dwight: I… I sang her, her favorite songs.
Angela: You put her in my freezer.
Dwight: It was beautiful and gentle and respectful. I fed her antihistamines and she gradually fell asleep.
Angela: Well then she barfed them up in the freezer and tried to get out.

I haven't watched the show so admittedly am just reading the text and might be missing some acting or character nuances but...this is horrific. I totally get the idea of putting animals out of their misery (I've had to make that decision to go to a vet a few times in my life) but I don't think I could forgive anyone who did THIS.

Angela was upset and broke up with him, and Dwight became disheveled and depressed. So it’s not like the show treated it as simply being forgotten in the next ep like it wasn’t a big deal.

I couldn’t forgive someone who did that irl, but I think Dwight meant well but was just socially stunted and clueless so it’s not the same as him doing it out of malice. He thought he was helping Angela and she would be grateful.

It's good the show just didn't play it for laughs. I still think it's horrible as a concept but the added context makes me feel a little better in that there were consequences for doing something that was misguided/insensitive.

OMG, this! If he'd taken the cat to the vet and had it put to sleep, that would be a horrible thing to do behind someone's back but it wouldn't necessarily be cruel to the cat. But he didn't just kill her cat. He tortured it first.

Angela sent Dwight to her apartment to help her blind, sick, elderly cat, Sprinkles, with medication (it was a lot, because of the aforementioned issues), but instead of doing that, Dwight put Sprinkles in the freezer and killed her (because in his opinion, Sprinkles was old and sick and suffering). However, he told Angela that Sprinkles had died naturally and he had put her body in the freezer. Angela sort of figured it out (it appeared Sprinkles had tried to escape from the freezer, she said) and Dwight said he'd done it because the cat was suffering.

I agree. But imo all the male characters in the US version of The Office (except maybe Oscar and Toby) were trash. But I wouldn't know as I stopped watching not long after this particular episode.
