Like many things fandom latches onto, it's more about the potential the reality for most. Although I'm sure that back in the day there were plenty of strong opinions about whether Katniss should wind up with White Bread or War Crimes McGee.

but i keep seeing essays on how this and that ya book sucks unlike hunger games with its amazing message and how the media surrounding the movies was sooooo ironic because missing the point and it's like... go past what the book says it's about and look at what's actually in the text at least once. please.

and i really like the first book! but they're all bad.

Why does Johanna have such weirdly invested stans? The books are poorly written (meaning the actual prose) but they're great stories full of great characters, of whom Johanna isn't one. She had a glimpse of potential, but it didn't end up being relevant, and it's weird to act like Suzanne Collins had some kind of obligation to expand on it. A lot of other characters were potentially interesting as well, but it wasn't their story. That's just how minor characters work.

She was a side character. She didn't need a bigger or better developed story. The books weren't about her. Why is this so hard to understand?

Snow didn’t need a bigger and better story either, and yet here we are.

People are invested in different characters than you are. Why is this so hard for you to understand?

Snow was the antagonist/villain, not a side character, so not at all comparable. And no, he didn't need a bigger story either. He got one because the author decided she wanted to give him one, not because fans whined about it.

Being invested in or a fan of a random side character does not somehow validate irrational feelings of anger at the author for not doing more with them.

Even if I liked her well enough in the book, the actress was so bad in the movies, it killed any desire I had to see more of her. *shrug*
