Honestly, it makes a lot of sense to me that Toph was a garbage parent in exactly that way - she gave her kids freedom which she wanted as a kid, not recognising that kids also need security and safety. But I liked that she didn't think she'd done anything wrong!

Though I think it's somewhat exaggerated how bad a parent Aang was - we see it from the kids' point of view and he wasn't in any way abusive or neglectful, he just paid more attention to one kid than the others and kids always notice that. And it's not something Katara could "make up for", either. But they still managed to raise three very different adults who were all successful in their own ways, so I don't think the absolute outrage is useful either.

Re: Aang: Exactly! And this kind of tunnel vision born of enthusiasm is very in character for Aang.

...But there are people who literally didn't realize he even HAD other kids. They literally thought his other two kids were the SERVANTS. That's pretty bad.

nayrt

Yeah, and when those people learned about the other children they were delighted because they thought that meant more airbenders, and when they learned that the kids weren't, they immediately lost interest. For all we know, they might have known or even met Tenzin's siblings before and then forgot about them because they didn't care.

Or, more than likely, Aang just had difficulty balancing everything he had on his plate. He's a bad parent, but that doesn't make him abusive. He's a good leader but that doesn't translate to parenting, especially when the closest thing he had to an actual parent was Gyatso and Katara.
