It isn't that I dislike that Aang is a shitty parent. It's that, at least during Korra's run, people in fandom wouldn't accept that he was a shitty parent. He was so shitty, that those weird acolytes didn't even know he had kids other than Tenzin. He apparently couldn't be bothered to tell them about his two oldest children. And Katara apparently tolerated this, I guess? She was no prize as a parent. And then Toph was just garbage parent of the year. She never actually emotionally matured past the age of twelve. I almost wanted to see if Azula had kids just to see how hard she'd fuck them up.

The only one I would have never tolerated as a bad parent would be Zuko. His entire arc was about defying his abuser, recognizing his abuse, rejecting it, and (hopefully) breaking the cycle of abuse by raising his daughter with love and kindness. I could handle it if he were a shitty firelord, shitty brother, shitty son, but not a shitty parent.

It would have been hilarious if she had been the best parent. Completely by accident and occasionally threatening the life out of anyone who tries to bully her kids, but still the best of the lot by far.

That would have been even better, tbh. Like she's so protective of them, they know nothing but the feeling of safety. And they've been trained to defend themselves and taught how to set boundaries. Like she just looks at every dumb thing every parent has ever done and said "I'm better than you. I won't make your mistakes." And she actually succeeds at it.

Honestly, it makes a lot of sense to me that Toph was a garbage parent in exactly that way - she gave her kids freedom which she wanted as a kid, not recognising that kids also need security and safety. But I liked that she didn't think she'd done anything wrong!

Though I think it's somewhat exaggerated how bad a parent Aang was - we see it from the kids' point of view and he wasn't in any way abusive or neglectful, he just paid more attention to one kid than the others and kids always notice that. And it's not something Katara could "make up for", either. But they still managed to raise three very different adults who were all successful in their own ways, so I don't think the absolute outrage is useful either.

Re: Aang: Exactly! And this kind of tunnel vision born of enthusiasm is very in character for Aang.

...But there are people who literally didn't realize he even HAD other kids. They literally thought his other two kids were the SERVANTS. That's pretty bad.

nayrt

Yeah, and when those people learned about the other children they were delighted because they thought that meant more airbenders, and when they learned that the kids weren't, they immediately lost interest. For all we know, they might have known or even met Tenzin's siblings before and then forgot about them because they didn't care.

Or, more than likely, Aang just had difficulty balancing everything he had on his plate. He's a bad parent, but that doesn't make him abusive. He's a good leader but that doesn't translate to parenting, especially when the closest thing he had to an actual parent was Gyatso and Katara.

Of course Toph went hard in the opposite direction of her parents. That's... Common.
