I will gladly admit that Aang's treatment is the number reason I hate Legend of Korra.

Same.

It's not the number 1 reason I hate Korra, but God, is it up there.

I found it completely believable that Toph would be a shitty parent. Her personality was a bit..rough as a kid, so it makes perfect sense that she would be even worse as an adult and not care that much about other people, even her kids. She might have been better off without any children.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-01 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Toph really fucked her kids up.

It isn't that I dislike that Aang is a shitty parent. It's that, at least during Korra's run, people in fandom wouldn't accept that he was a shitty parent. He was so shitty, that those weird acolytes didn't even know he had kids other than Tenzin. He apparently couldn't be bothered to tell them about his two oldest children. And Katara apparently tolerated this, I guess? She was no prize as a parent. And then Toph was just garbage parent of the year. She never actually emotionally matured past the age of twelve. I almost wanted to see if Azula had kids just to see how hard she'd fuck them up.

The only one I would have never tolerated as a bad parent would be Zuko. His entire arc was about defying his abuser, recognizing his abuse, rejecting it, and (hopefully) breaking the cycle of abuse by raising his daughter with love and kindness. I could handle it if he were a shitty firelord, shitty brother, shitty son, but not a shitty parent.

It would have been hilarious if she had been the best parent. Completely by accident and occasionally threatening the life out of anyone who tries to bully her kids, but still the best of the lot by far.

That would have been even better, tbh. Like she's so protective of them, they know nothing but the feeling of safety. And they've been trained to defend themselves and taught how to set boundaries. Like she just looks at every dumb thing every parent has ever done and said "I'm better than you. I won't make your mistakes." And she actually succeeds at it.

Honestly, it makes a lot of sense to me that Toph was a garbage parent in exactly that way - she gave her kids freedom which she wanted as a kid, not recognising that kids also need security and safety. But I liked that she didn't think she'd done anything wrong!

Though I think it's somewhat exaggerated how bad a parent Aang was - we see it from the kids' point of view and he wasn't in any way abusive or neglectful, he just paid more attention to one kid than the others and kids always notice that. And it's not something Katara could "make up for", either. But they still managed to raise three very different adults who were all successful in their own ways, so I don't think the absolute outrage is useful either.

Re: Aang: Exactly! And this kind of tunnel vision born of enthusiasm is very in character for Aang.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-02 08:41 am (UTC)(link)
...But there are people who literally didn't realize he even HAD other kids. They literally thought his other two kids were the SERVANTS. That's pretty bad.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-02 10:12 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt

Yeah, and when those people learned about the other children they were delighted because they thought that meant more airbenders, and when they learned that the kids weren't, they immediately lost interest. For all we know, they might have known or even met Tenzin's siblings before and then forgot about them because they didn't care.

Or, more than likely, Aang just had difficulty balancing everything he had on his plate. He's a bad parent, but that doesn't make him abusive. He's a good leader but that doesn't translate to parenting, especially when the closest thing he had to an actual parent was Gyatso and Katara.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-02 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Of course Toph went hard in the opposite direction of her parents. That's... Common.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-02 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm still miffed at 1. The lack of Grunkle Sokka, and 2. The idea that Korra had zero interaction with any of her predecessor's allies aside from Katara. Really?!

(Anonymous) 2020-09-03 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Zero? She was friends with Toph, Zuko, Iroh, and was an honorary member of both Toph and Aang’s extended families.

I'd like to see more sequel media where the protagonists from the original choose not to have children. Not necessarily all of them, because I think storylines about a character's children and the choice to become a parent can be interesting, but I'd love to see characters make the decision not to have children of their own, because they recognize it as something they'd struggle with (or something they just don't want).

In the case of LOK, I think it's kind of sad for a lot of viewers to see characters they may have really identified with in the past growing up to fail to be better parents, no matter how interesting or plausible a character arc that could be. I'm not a huge fan of the writing in LOK in general, which I guess is not an unpopular opinion, so that probably contributes to people not liking those storylines in that particular show.

Of course Aang had troubles. He was trying to revive an entire nation, meaning he had to do a lot with his one airbender child. The other two were a nonbender and a waterbender. I'm sure Katara tried to gently remind Aang that he had other children, but between Avatar work (which he undoubtedly had) and reviving an entire nation, his other kids fell to the wayside. Katara probably eventually gave up that fight and did what she could for the other two.

Toph went in the opposite direction her own parents went. Whereas they gave her no freedom, she gave her children too much freedom.

Zuko seems to have been the only decent parent among them because he learned his work-life balance very fast.

Rewatching this now and can I just say HELL YEAH to Tenzin for being awesome? His own dad was extra af and he has immense pressure on his shoulders to rebuild an ancient society, lead on Repub City’s political council, and train the Avatar. But he still exercises patience, pays attention to all his children, recognizes their unique differences with tea parties and lemur training et al., fiercely protects them in battle, and loves the hell out of his sweet wife. All while putting up with terrorists and numbnut citizens and Korra and the brothers’ moody teen crap, plus probably her neglected dogbear leaving giant seal-scented shits in his World Heritage site zen garden. He’s just terrific.
