So like... do you edit?

(Anonymous) 2020-09-05 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. But when I was writing fic it was very niche pairings, not the fandom darlings, so I didn't see a lot of traffic.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-05 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Curious why you would put all that work into your writing for so little response.

I'll write fic for my own amusement, sure. But going to the trouble of editing and making it good for a barely-there audience? Nah. Why?

(Anonymous) 2020-09-05 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I think it would bother me to put out there half-assed. Even if only one person read it, it's a disservice to them to throw something out there that I'm not 100% proud of.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-05 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
OK yeah, totally get that. But doing all that work for one person who won't bother to mash a kudos button? Really? You are far more generous than I!

(Anonymous) 2020-09-05 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, I write for my amusement and also because it's my craft/hobby. It's just fun for me. An audience is a bonus, but not a goal.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-05 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
OK yes but why do you edit and post if not for an audience.

This intrigues me because I have like at least 3 dozen fics I've written for my own amusement or to push myself, but I don't edit and post the ones I know won't get traffic.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-05 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
DA

I write because I feel like writing something. I post because I liked my story, which means someone else might find it and like it and enjoy reading it, and why deny them that opportunity? I wrote it anyway, so the work is already done, and uploading it is like, three buttons.

If they never leave kudos or comments who cares? I never check back or respond anyway. My stories are simply out there for you to enjoy if you enjoy them and ignore if you want.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-05 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah! That's it for me too!

(Anonymous) 2020-09-05 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Another anon, but same. I write because I enjoy it, I post on the off chance that someone else might enjoy reading what I wrote. And sometimes people do! It's a nice feeling to know that something you did for fun is something that someone else liked.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-05 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
YES THIS. Literally every word of this comment is this.

there are a hundred reasons besides "for an audience" to write and I'm not sure why the other anon can't grasp that. fic being posted is being shared with the world even if only one person ever clicks on it to read it. it's been shared. a good has happened.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-05 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yup same here. I write for myself first and then share it because hey, someone else might like it too. And I consider that reason enough to warrant posting it.

I really do just write for fun so even if one other person enjoys it I consider that a win. Also I mostly write for tiny fandoms/ships, if I wanted oodles of feedback I am already not producing the right content, lmao.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-05 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Same same same. I have a hard time understanding people who do it for reasons other than this right here.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-05 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
(Different Anon here): I post and edit for myself. I have too much love of language and I want to put the best product out there FOR ME. I want to be able to take pride in all of my work.

I don't care if I get one comment or ten, one hit or a thousand. I write for myself, I write the best I can (includes editing and betas, sometimes) and I share it with others. I wrote a m/m slash fic for a pairing that involved a one time guest star and a regular on a tv show--I put as much into that fic as I did for all of my "popular" pairing fics. I've received a five comments on it from people who appreciate it (and saw the same thing I did on the screen between the two). It's never gonna have a ton of hits--rn less than 400, with a couple handfuls of kudos (esp now that the main character was fucking killed off...) but that's okay with me. But then I don't need ego gratification from how my fics "perform".

I know the pain of being in a small fandom/ghost pairing, so I appreciate authors who write those pairings...and even more if they give a shit about their fic.

But hey, you don't want to put work into stuff that won't give you an ego stroke, then by all means, you do you. Honestly, only writing for the comments and other people? Will only bring disappointment because you'll never get enough comments or hits.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-05 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Original Anon who feels the same way: I'm glad I'm not the only one!

(Anonymous) 2020-09-05 02:12 am (UTC)(link)

Exactly why I write for me and don't bother posting!

(Anonymous) 2020-09-05 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
SA - also your comment came across as quite mean? I wasn't trying to antagonize anyone here and hope my own did not come across that way.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-05 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT I don't think you came across as mean or antagonistic, just...very fixed on your own experience to the point where it seemed a little pushy to keep asking "why would you put work into something that won't get you a reward?"

People genuinely are rewarded by different things. Some people are rewarded by finishing a project at all and making it look nice. Some people genuinely do not need anyone else to tell them they did a good job. You don't have to understand it, but there's no reason not to believe it.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-05 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Why...not??

+1

(Anonymous) 2020-09-05 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
I know right.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-05 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

I edit as I write, so it's not a huge issue to do one final read-through/edit before posting a story. I basically read it to make sure I didn't miss a word/misspell something/leave out something important. I'm at a level of writing where I feel comfortable doing this, but I've also been writing and posting fic for over 20 years. My early stuff should definitely not have been posted without some serious edits, but I learned a lot by doing that.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-05 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
DA

I'm curious myself, do you not edit for yourself? I mean I absolutely count editing as part of the writing process and it bothers me to have a typo or a comma or have a missing word and not correct it. I'm sometimes slightly embarrassed at a grammar or spelling mistake I make, even if I'm the only one who sees it.

As for posting, I like kudos and comments, but I think I would probably post even if there wasn't a feedback system. I used to be a complete lurker who read and enjoyed fic, but didn't leave feedback for the longest time. I still only do it for something that really impresses me and I assume there are others out there just like me. And I am okay with people not wanting to leave feedback for whatever their reasons.
