So I’m black and I don’t tell white people they can’t say the word. But I side eye white people who feel like they should be able to say it cause it’s in the song. I use it casually, sure but I also know what it feels like to have it used against me. Start letting white folks use it in a casual context like music they’ll start thinking it’s okay outside that context too and that’s not something I’ll say I’m okay with.

I'm white and I cannot possibly understand why anyone else white would want to use it. It's a slur so weighted in blood that it makes me feel physically sick to think of saying it.

Look, maybe some people just want to say the n word, and that's fucked up. But I think most people just don't like being told they can't quote someone else accurately, because that feels remarkably like censorship.

My university lit class covered Huck Finn, which involved us reading large portions of the text out loud. Are you of the opinion we shouldn't have done that? Like, where's the line, for you?

I don’t speak for all black people, but for me, using it strips it of its power to hurt me. Hearing it from a black person usually comes from a place of jest or friendship. But coming from a non black person, especially a white person, invokes an entirely different set of emotions.

Obviously say whatever you want. But I also reserve the right not to trust or associate with you.
