Do you believe in anything supernatural?

(Anonymous) 2020-09-07 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Ghosts, aliens, UFOS, angels, etc?

Nope. But they're cool to read about!

Same. For example, I've been in some pretty allegedly haunted places and not seen anything. The building I live in is late Victorian, someone probably died in here at some point etc. But reading or watching ghost stories for entertainment? Inject it into my veins!

I also have people trying to convince me that my sleep paralysis episodes are supernatural but as an experience, it's nothing but an actual brain fart to me.

EDIT: I think aliens could be real but they're probably so far away from us that the chances of any meaningful contact in our lifetimes is extremely slim. It's quite a question as well wondering, what if they're worse than us? Or even what if they're better? Would we want to meet that? Would they want anything to do with us? Etc.

Same. I love them in fiction, but I think in reality, there are usually more reasonable explanations for most supernatural phenomenon.

I think this pretty well sums up my attitudes on all this stuff, too :).

(That being said, sometimes I'll be like, "Ooh, I want to check out a haunted place, it'd be cool!" and then I'll start thinking, "...but then again, maybe it's best not to disrupt anything, just in case..." :p.

And the thought of being alone in a morgue/funeral home/cemetery creeps me the fuck out, so make of that what you will, too.)

Most UFO sightings clearly either aren't real or have compelling natural explanations. There are a relatively small number of UFO sightings where I don't think skeptics have provided any compelling natural explanation for the sighting. But I think probably there is a non-supernatural non-ET explanation for those too, we just don't know what it is. Aliens (or extradimensional beings, or hidden non-human terrestrial beings) are not in contact with us.

Ghosts could be real but there's no good evidence they actually do. Angels aren't real.

My otherwise reliable and down to earth friend has had a number of experiences that seem to be ghost related. It's that alone that makes me question whether ghosts are real.

Aliens aren't supernatural and probably exist/have existed. I'm fascinated by the theory of the "big filter". That something happens to destroy a civilization before it advances enough to make first contact, and that's why we've never met any aliens.

That's a very human idea - that every race must be as self-destructive as we are.

Re: Do you believe in anything supernatural?

(Anonymous) 2020-09-08 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
The great filter idea doesn't necessarily mean that the civilization self-destructs. It's just that some mechanism exists by which civilizations end (which would explain why we haven't found any evidence of technological civilization outside of earth - that's the basic question that the great filter is an attempt to answer).

Frequently in SF fiction, the explanation will be that there's some galactic force that goes around and periodically murders civilizations - for instance Fred Saberhagen's Berserkers, Jack McDevitt's Omega Clouds, Alastair Reynolds' Inhibitors, also other places.

My theory is that complex life is vanishingly rare in the universe in the first place, so the "great filter" is behind us, so to speak

But what's so damn special about humans that every hypothetical group of aliens in the universe (or even just the galaxy) would be rushing over to make friends with us?

no

I believe alien life exists out there somewhere 100%, whether it's as advanced as us or we'll ever be able to see it is another question entirely, but some kind of alien animal life at least? Even just bacteria? Sure.

Honestly I love the idea of us going to a planet that has life, and finding just a regular, boring fish. It's not funky looking, it's not weird, it's just a Cod you can find anywhere on Earth. That would be fucking hilarious.

But aliens visiting us? No, that doesn't happen and pretty much all UFO 'sightings' are completely made-up or the people in question were on some kind of substance and either not admitting to it or they didn't know. Or they were half-asleep, never trust your in-between brain guys, it lies.

I used to believe in ghosts/spirits because I live with visual and auditory hallucinations, so as a kid you bet I thought that shit was all real and that I was haunted. But I got properly diagnosed as a teen and since that gave me a rational explanation of what was happening to me I stopped believing in them, it's just my brain being super-fucky. Frankly you really can't trust your own eyes and ears anywhere near as much as you think you can. Brains are messy. Also if I was born 100+ years earlier I would totally have been considered 'possessed', I'm glad I wasn't tbh.

a lot of people who were accused of being possessed a hundred or more years ago were actually mentally ill.

AYRT.

Oh yeah, and the added stress of it all just made it all worse which ofc only 'confirmed' the suspicions of those doing the accusing. It was all kinds of fucked up.

I used to believe in angels and possibly aliens when I was younger, but now I don't believe in any of what you mentioned. None of it exists in reality, it all only exists as entertainment.

I don't think so? I mean, have I been absolutely convinced there is something lurking in the darkness of my room waiting to rend me limb from limb: yes. Do I think that the shadow-lurking dismemberer is a real thing that needs to be studied: no.
Most of the 'evidence' I see for this sort of thing is insanely shaky, to be honest. I'd sort of like to believe in ghosts and the supernatural and whatever, but... I don't think I do.

I believe there's life in the universe other than on earth. I doubt it's abducting humans to probe or mutilating cattle or concerned with or aware of Earth/humans specifically at all, I just think it would be really bizarre if life only evolved on one planet out of billions (trillions? idk.)

I don't believe in anything supernatural, religious, or spiritual.

I was big on UFOs when I was a kid (I think I watched too much X-Files). I don't believe in them to the same degree anymore, but I still think there's something out there.

I'm always opened to the possibilities to the supernatural existing, but I don't go out my way seek it out. Would definitely watch a documentary or something along those lines about it though.

Nah.

It's nice to imagine what we might do if things like that existed and affected our lives but they don't. I only really get angry about it if people are hurting each other or conning each other out of money because angels or aliens or whatnot.
