Okay, I know this is sort of old wank but... Katara/Aang just never worked for me. In the original series it was how Katara always took this very maternal role in the group and the whole idea of marrying a man who treats you like his mother is just a big old NOPE for me. In the sequel, it just seemed like their relationship hadn't worked out that well.

Yes. I think Aang having a crush was completely believable, and Katara's reaction to finding out was believable too. They're still just kids even though they're dealing with a lot.

The romance at the end felt like the writers went "well he saved the world so he should get the girl".

Maybe if they'd just left it off and let us imagine that they got together as adults I'd believe it? Idk.

I think the idea of Katara as any sort of mother figure to ANYONE can only be explained by benevolent sexism. She's the oldest girl in the main group, and she's kind-hearted. That alone does not equal mother. More often she falls into typical childish behavior just as much as everyone else, including Aang. I don't ship them either because I thought the romance was underdeveloped and forced, but I nope so hard at the "Aang's mommy" complaints.

It's brought up by the characters in the show though? It's not just a fandom thing. I think it was Toph that said it and Sokka confirmed that she does act like a mom.
