Also inspired by 1: Bad romances

On the flip side, what are some romantic arcs you thought were badly done? What kind of arc would you have preferred?

I'm a diehard DS9 fan, but I've never liked Odo/Kira; I preferred them as non-romantic friends.

Me neither, but I disliked Bashir/Ezri even more. It's like they decided to throw him a consolation prize.

I ship them, but I don't think the way they were written was the best. I wish it hadn't been written so he was in love with her for so long without her sharing his feelings. I generally just don't like romances like that. I wish they'd just both started developing feelings and gone from friends to lovers naturally.

From what I remember, it felt to me like it was too one-sided on Odo's part to be happy (I mean, I think they played it so Kira did have feelings for him, but at the time I guess I felt like that came out of nowhere and I wasn't buying it, like he was hopelessly in love and she was just humoring him).

The main character and Meghan Markle's character in Suits. They're an archetype of a fairly typical American brand of romance - genuinely hard working but bland beautiful girl is wowed by and falls in love with the 'special'* but misunderstood main male character. She works her ass off whereas he is so naturally gifted that he constantly excels her.

Ugh.

It's a weird dynamic to me because it seems to imply that there's a direct connection between the skill in question and romantic compatibility/success and it's just... weird

Like it feels like it reduces both characters to their skill and interest in the thing that the show is about, which I guess is a pretty typical thing for characters in that genre, but I still think it's bad writing and character work

I actually don't really like Mulder/Scully as a romantic relationship that much, and I don't think it's well-developed.

I think it's a great relationship, but for the most part they're basically played as emotional and intellectual soul mates from day 1. That's a really fascinating and interesting dynamic and it's interesting to watch how it plays out between the two of them. But it doesn't offer a lot of room for specifically romantic development, and it feels like the biggest change in their relationship when it becomes romantic is that they kiss now.

House and Cuddy. Bones and Booth. Basically any romance that happens because writers seem to not have any idea what to do with the show.

It's basically impossible to give Holmes characters a satisfying romantic partner other than Watson. It never works. People should just stop trying. Either go Holmes/Watson, or have Holmes be single and Watson can go have romantic relationships.

(In the case of House they should clearly have gone House/Wilson)

House and Cuddy is such a weird one because I really liked the idea of the ship and then it actually happened in canon and it was...so bad. So so bad. When they're not actually together it's perfect but then the writers tried to stick them together and just ruined the entire dynamic.

I shipped House and Cuddy so hard when I watched the show the first time. Then it happened and was so badly written it destroyed my interest in the ship and in the show in general. I rewatched later and ended up shipping House/Wilson and stopping after season 4 and refusing to watch further.

Richard Castle and Kate Beckett.

The UST was stale by Season 3. Then when they did get together Season 5, they threw Kate's entire character under the bus. Then I don't know what happened. I never got past Season 6 and I heard terrible things about what they were doing to the actresses b/c Nathan Fillion.

If they were actually good together, they should have gotten together earlier and err... just keep the characters going the same way but affectionate? Though, being in a relationship, they wouldn't be able to work together anymore. I mean, but since when does TV care about actual POLICE RULES.

I was hoping for Rizzoli and Kent Drake just to see where it'd go. But then the show got cancelled. Sadness. (I know most shipped Rizzoli and Isles and I was just so happy to see a functioning female friendship relationship. Seriously.) So, not bad, just... nothing ever came of it and I feel a bit robbed. (I guess that is what fanfic is for. I have one outlined but time!)

Okay, I know this is sort of old wank but... Katara/Aang just never worked for me. In the original series it was how Katara always took this very maternal role in the group and the whole idea of marrying a man who treats you like his mother is just a big old NOPE for me. In the sequel, it just seemed like their relationship hadn't worked out that well.

Bo and Lauren in Lost Girl. I think I ship Bo and every other woman on the show but Lauren. Their relationship should have ended earlier because she was always lying and then trying to get sympathy from Bo, but they dragged it out as this epic romance when it didn't have the chemistry or history to back that up. I'm surprised they were able to even make the forbidden human/fae thing so boring.

I actually did ship Ichigo and Orihime... but not the way it happened in canon. I ship the version that exists in my head where they actually communicate with each other and get comfortable being together outside 'fighting for their lives' type situations.

Pretty much all romance in anime and JRPGs is my idea of bad and forced. Regardless of genres, the leads are almost always more shippable with their best friends and/or teammates than their established canon love interest.

It's already been said, but another echo for Castle/Beckett, I never felt their relationship was at all a natural progression and didn't feel like they made any sense as a couple.

Jane/Lisbon on The Mentalist. I don't hate this one, but I do feel they were very blah and not very convincing as a romance at all.

Kurt/Blane on Glee. I appreciate them for being a popular LGBT ship and helping push LGBT inclusion on TV forwards, but god I hated them so much as a couple. They were just terrible for one another(though to be fair all of the romances on that show were pretty bad, even the ones I liked).

John/Dany on GoT. Unbearably dull from both a writing and chemistry perspective, made even more boggling from the fact that they actually should have been interesting given the whole incest thing alone. But it was like watching pain dry.

I disliked every single romance on The Big Bang Theory, all those ladies could do so much better than the twerps they ended up with.

Kyle Reese/Sarah Conner from Terminator: Genysis. Another contender for 'so boring I could feel myself aging while watching it' with the added fun of sudden!romance out of nowhere because they spent the whole movie angry at one another/hating each other's guts until they magically weren't because this movie wanted sequels dammit! Granted the whole movie was meh, but they were the meh cherry on top of a medicore snore fest.

I never bought Ten/Rose. They were in love, but it didn't feel "real" to me for some reason. I dunno what would have saved it though.

+1

Just about any shounen anime or manga where the lead spends most of his time being concerned about his male best friend/rival character and the female love interest character barely exists except to be the love interest character.

usagi and mamoru from sailor moon. it wasn't so bad in the first season, but in season two when mamoru starts avoiding usagi under the guise of "protecting" her, it turned me off of the pairing permanently.

i also can't stand chibiusa for the same reason. i do pity her somewhat because the crap she went through, but at the same time, is it so bad that i wish she just didn't exist? (i will admit though, i loved that scene in crystal where she, as black lady, made out with a brainwashed mamoru in front of usagi. it was my favorite scene in all of crystal. ♥)
