Inspired by #1, well developed romances

I don't mean pairings you ship, but romances that are actually developed over time in canon, where you can see how two people fell in love whether you shipped it or not.

Mulder and Scully are still number 1 for me.

Elizabeth Bennett/Mr. Darcy are pretty much the only canon romance that ever convinced me.

Angela and Hodgins on Bones.

They broke up. They got back together. They talked about their problems. Strangely emotionally healthy.

It's not anything I'd write fic for and I do ship it because it was cutely done. Now if only Bones and Booth were so well done. (Mutters, mumbles.)

I thought Parker/Hardison was done well on Leverage.

Aeryn/Crichton in Farscape, the actors had so much chemistry.

Also I think Elisa/Goliath from Gargoyles was the first thing I ever shipped and rewatching the show on Disney+ the relationship still holds up.

Peter Bishop/Olivia Dunham (Fringe)
Whitley Gilbert/Dwayne Wayne (A Different World)

Minalde and Rudy, from Barbara Hambly's Darwath books. They actually fall into bed very quickly (everybody's scared and lonely and looking for comfort), but there's a lot of growing up that both characters do, for various reasons, and it goes from a kind-of-not-casual-fling destined to end soon, through a lot of travails, and ends with a very solid True Love.

Not canon now, but I always liked the way the Luke and Mara romance was developed in Star Wars Legends. That was my favorite Star Wars pairing until Kylo and Hux came along.

Delenn and Sheridan from Babylon 5. I love the way they start out just being friends and getting to know each other for cultural exchange purposes but it develops into love somewhere along the way.

Worf and Jadzia from DS9. Favorite Star Trek pairing, hands down. They were such a great pairing.

On the flip side, what are some romantic arcs you thought were badly done? What kind of arc would you have preferred?

I'm a diehard DS9 fan, but I've never liked Odo/Kira; I preferred them as non-romantic friends.

The main character and Meghan Markle's character in Suits. They're an archetype of a fairly typical American brand of romance - genuinely hard working but bland beautiful girl is wowed by and falls in love with the 'special'* but misunderstood main male character. She works her ass off whereas he is so naturally gifted that he constantly excels her.

Ugh.

I actually don't really like Mulder/Scully as a romantic relationship that much, and I don't think it's well-developed.

I think it's a great relationship, but for the most part they're basically played as emotional and intellectual soul mates from day 1. That's a really fascinating and interesting dynamic and it's interesting to watch how it plays out between the two of them. But it doesn't offer a lot of room for specifically romantic development, and it feels like the biggest change in their relationship when it becomes romantic is that they kiss now.

House and Cuddy. Bones and Booth. Basically any romance that happens because writers seem to not have any idea what to do with the show.

Richard Castle and Kate Beckett.

The UST was stale by Season 3. Then when they did get together Season 5, they threw Kate's entire character under the bus. Then I don't know what happened. I never got past Season 6 and I heard terrible things about what they were doing to the actresses b/c Nathan Fillion.

If they were actually good together, they should have gotten together earlier and err... just keep the characters going the same way but affectionate? Though, being in a relationship, they wouldn't be able to work together anymore. I mean, but since when does TV care about actual POLICE RULES.

I was hoping for Rizzoli and Kent Drake just to see where it'd go. But then the show got cancelled. Sadness. (I know most shipped Rizzoli and Isles and I was just so happy to see a functioning female friendship relationship. Seriously.) So, not bad, just... nothing ever came of it and I feel a bit robbed. (I guess that is what fanfic is for. I have one outlined but time!)

Okay, I know this is sort of old wank but... Katara/Aang just never worked for me. In the original series it was how Katara always took this very maternal role in the group and the whole idea of marrying a man who treats you like his mother is just a big old NOPE for me. In the sequel, it just seemed like their relationship hadn't worked out that well.

Things crazies say

(Anonymous) 2020-09-09 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I will never understand how anyone can go into a forum/discord and interject things like ”SCREEEEEEEECH” into their posts and expect to be taken seriously.

Does anyone actually find this cute, endearing or attractive? Followed by long, ranting incoherent lines? I’m amazed by the sheer number of people that do this, then wonder why people ignore them.
