(Anonymous) 2020-09-10 04:20 am (UTC)(link)It's much more useful and meaningful to talk about the specific social context of different groups than to draw a dividing line where every group other than people of white Northern European descent can be considered a minority. And the actual social context of Jewish people in America is complex. On the one hand, there are clearly some contexts where Jewishness differentiates Jewish people from white America, and part of that is the historical, unrelenting, and evil context of anti-Semitism. On the other hand, there are clearly and objectively many times, many contexts, many ways in which huge swaths of the Jewish population in America do fold neatly into the American conception of whiteness, and while that is always a tenuous and complicated thing, it does happen and I don't think there's any point denying it.
Also, frankly, everyone forgets about every mass shooting within a week at this point. And also, I don't really care about casting or whatever, I mostly think it doesn't matter unless the race is integral to the character.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-10 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)this comment sounds an awful lot like you trying to justify the removal of Jewish characters from any narrative that isn't specifically about Jewishness, because you think that the only valid criterion for someone "counting" as a minority or deserving representation is whether or not you, personally, feel sorry for them in some way, and if you don't then you think it is just fine to erase any and all racism, bigotry, and/or violence they are experiencing as a direct result of being part of that group, and to have them removed from narratives in which they previously appeared

(Anonymous) 2020-09-10 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)What I said about casting is not specific to Jews or Jewishness, it's a general opinion about casting across the board. So, no.
The rest of this, I just disagree with totally, so, again, no.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-10 06:12 am (UTC)(link)I don't go to church anymore, but considering Christchurch and the regular targeting of mosques, the Sikh temple shooting from a few years ago and Charleston and the long history of Black churches being destroyed, I'd guess more than a few people do.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-10 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)So like, this person isn't an Ashkenazi Jew anymore because they're Mizrahi. Or an Indian Jew. Or Beta Israeli.
But yeah, just taking it to be like "oh they're white so we can just get rid of the Jewish part" is wrong.
