I haven't watched the series but felt the same way about the book. I liked that it wasn't a tragedy that came out of nowhere... I mean, it was a shock, yes. But when you think about it, you could look back and see why it happened, and it made sense. It wasn't a case of the Idiot Ball, it was just...decision making that turned out to be flawed, with dire consequences.

NA

Agreed! The difference between GRRM's writing, and the showrunners' writing is that GRRM's "twists" only felt like twists, in reality you could see them coming a mile away. The moment Robb chose to break his vows to Walder Frey, we knew Walder would get his vengeance sooner or later. It felt inevitable.

Yup. That Walder Frey is a heartless bastard. I loved the huge deal Cat made in the books about guest rights and protections, it made the betrayal wound that much more. Made his comeuppance somewhat satisfying. (I say somewhat because the writing really started getting wonky in season 6, but I was still glad to see him meet his end... after seeing his kin meat their end... get it... meat...)
