It sidelines Boyega's character in the sense that the connective tissue between his character's material, and the rest of the plot of the film, is underdeveloped

But the movie does give his character a lot of shit to do which is interesting on its own terms

Not if that "shit to do" was pointless, annoying, drawn out and only written to get him away from the main character.

Yeah...it definitely felt pointless since it ended up basically being like, "yeah all that shit you did on Canto Bight? Doesn't matter. Doesn't help. Sorry not sorry you wasted your (and the audience's) time."

Like...it felt like things would have gone just the same if they'd never left and just sat around in the ship's hold for a while instead.

Yes, that's what I mean when I say that the connection between the Canto Bight stuff and the rest of the plot was underdeveloped. My point is, I don't think the Canto Bight stuff is bad on its own. It was entertaining on its own merits, and therefore, it was basically good material to give to Boyega. They just needed to do a better job connecting the Canto Bight stuff to the rest of the movie, probably by rewriting stuff in the rest of the movie, like the space chase, which actually did suck.

It absolutely mattered. Things went worse for the Resistance because Finn and Rose went on their adventure.

One of the main themes of the movie is failure, and learning to deal with it.

This! I really don't get why his stans are so buttmad, except that he wasn't the center of absolutely everything and didn't get the highest point value female prize in the end. He had a pretty important part to play in TFA and TLJ. TROS was just a huge mess where Disney didn't know what they wanted to do with any of the characters except Kylo Ren, and actively wrote a WOC character and an interracial relationship out of the movie itself in an effort to appease the screeching hordes online (who actively ran the actress who played that character off of social media.)

I think Disney has actually been doing a lot better with racial diversity and female characters lately than it has in the past, but it's obvious now that nothing they do will ever be good enough for the screaming brats on the Internet.

You yourself point out that TROS was a huge heaping pile of garbage in this regard

The fact that it was also a huge heaping pile of garbage in a bunch of other regards doesn't make it wrong for people to be angry about it, and calling them "screaming brats" when you acknowledge that they have a valid point seems really dumb
