How is your secret being misinterpreted, then? You basically said that you don't think those subjects are truly taboo because people consume media about them. It's not bad PR. Cannibalism is a major taboo - just try and eat one of your neighbors and see what happens. It seems to me that it's like most people have said and you're confusing "taboo" with "stuff nobody would ever be fascinated by or consume media about". People love horror. Does it mean they want to be chased by an axe-wielding murderer? Well, no. Watching media where frightening, taboo things happen is a way to participate in a fascinating concept without any real risk to yourself. That's why people enjoy it.
