I've paid for fanart and I'd definitely pay for fic. However, I'd commission someone to write the story I wanted to tell (as in hire a ghostwriter). I'd never pay to read someone else's story. The whole point of reading fic is that it's free. If I have to start paying for it, I'm going back to pirating published books that are better-written.
