It says they changed the names.
(Anonymous) 2020-09-12 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)2: They changed the names when they switched it to Patreon and started charging for it.
3: They were wildly OOC anyway, looking at what the secret maker says, so I doubt they bore much resemblance to their canon selves anyway.
I mean, let's say you take a group of characters you like from ... I dunno, anything from Attack on Titan to Game of Thrones, whatever, and put them in a Pirate setting (to use the secret image). Now, badly write one or more of the main characters to the point where you only know who it is by the names because their behaviour isn't in-character. What resemblance does it have to the actual canon other than physical descriptions and a name? With both of those altered, it's just original writing.
With that in mind, I don't see the issue in them posting it on Patreon, apart from it being shitty to the original fans who were following it. They have a right to make money off their work and if they aren't using the canon setting, or in-character characters, or the canon names, it's just original fic at that point.
I wouldn't pay for fanfiction, but only because of the moral/license issues. I've both read and written fanfic better than some published drivel, so it's not a case of 'Published writers > Fanfic writers' for a lot of people.
