People get attached to the people who are on screen the most because they have the most character building interactions on the shows. So, it's often read as 'romantic' even if the writers don't mean it to be.

So, that's why there is a lot more m/m shipping than f/f shipping since it's rare for 2 females to have a huge amount of screen time together. Rizolli and Isles is one of the main ones I remember. OUAT had Regina and Emma b/c the two were not only enemies, they shared a great deal of screen time (and a son.)

Best explanation for this stuff I've ever come across. Hope it makes sense.
