To be fair, porgs were put into place because it was easier to render them over all the puffins on the island where they were filming than to try to clean up every shot to make it look like nothing's there. Or at least that's my understanding of how that happened.

So of course, Disney would also use it as an opportunity to monetize something that could be made into a squishy collectible.
