Re: Controversial Unpopular Opinions?

I actually like fluffy incest fic, and I don't think it has to always be dark and fucked up. I don't want to read anything abusive or non-consensual or with power imbalances or whatever, I pretty much will only read it where it's between two siblings (or cousins) who are close in age, and nothing happens until they're both adults. I realize that's "unrealistic" but so much of what happens in fiction is unrealistic, why does this need to be realistic?

AYRT I feel like there's a middle ground here. Between all the dark stuff you mentioned and fluffy is the inspiration-rich plains of emotional turmoil inherent in incest pairings. Angst and hurt/comfort are my favourite parts of that genre and I wouldn't call those either dark or fluffy.

SA I have no idea why I put AYRT there, sorry.

Yeah, I agree. There is a middle ground, and I guess it somewhat depends on what your definition of fluffy is. I probably should've just said "not dark". I read a published book where the main relationship was incest, and they told everyone about it, and no one had a problem except for one person (one of them's ex, and they were equally upset when they thought they were in a relationship with someone new that they weren't related to, so I don't think that really counts). Including their dad. And everyone being accepting took me out of the story because that was a little TOO unrealistic, even for me. Maybe that's the kind of thing people mean when they say they don't want it to be fluffy, IDK.

I'm fine with some angst and complicated-ness, I just don't think it has to be ALL dark and a "the world is ending/deep depression/we must kill ourselves because obviously we're such horrible people/etc." kind of thing (which I feel like I've seen way too much of, although maybe it depends a lot on the fandom here).

SA

I read another published book with an incest relationship, completely consensual, but one of them felt so guilty over it he killed himself...that kind of thing is just too depressing for me and not something I'm really interested in reading.

That's definitely a stretch! Although there was that Brazilian film a while back where everyone was sort of silently accepting and that didn't actually feel that unrealistic.

Fluffy is not my thing, so I wouldn't call what I prefer to read fluffy. But then again i'm not into needlessly dark takes with unhappy endings so huh?

Haha i'm in desperate need of a beta for a long incest pairing fic i'm writing but i'm the only shipper of it in my fandom. I'm so desperate I almost asked if you'd be interested nonny lololol.

From Beginning to End? I don't remember much about it, but yeah, I don't remember it being that unrealistic, either.

Yeah, that's the main thing I meant. I mean, sometimes I'm into super dark stuff, just not ALL THE TIME. I need a little bit of...if not necessarily happiness, at least...okay, and not horribly depressing.

I'm probably not in the fandom (just out of likelihood/numbers because most of the fandoms I'm into are pretty small/obscure) and I've never been a beta before (so there's a good chance I wouldn't know what I'm doing lol) but I'd be happy to give it a shot if you'd be interested.

Aw man, that's real kind of you anon, thanks. I won't take you up on it because I feel a bit like I've shaghaied you into it. Appreciate the offer though . 😊

Yeah I like dark sometimes but all the time is a bit much. I guess it depends on the fandom though. Supernatural for instance very much lends itself to darker fic and not fluff.

From beginning to end that was the one. Yeah I thought it was well done in that story.

Okay, but I really don't mind. I sometimes read stories from fandoms I'm not in if they have a plot I find interesting, so I'd be fine with that if you are. Not sure how to even coordinate it since we're both anon, but if you ever change your mind, I'm usually around here somewhere!

Supernatural is one of the ones I was thinking of that tend to be dark. I mean, I guess to be fair, in that case, it's kind of hard for anything to really be fluffy given the tone of the show (although I'm several seasons behind, but I can't imagine it's changed too much in that regard). A lot of it's just way too depressing for me, though.

Yeah, I think that movie was pretty good from what I remember. It reminded me a lot of a book called The Carnivorous Lamb, which was also pretty good (although in the book, I think only one person knew, but she was okay with it, it's also been a really long time since I read it).

AYRT no longer anon. Thanks anon! If you're really serious you can find my email in my DW profile for this account. If you're happy to do emails that is? Seriously so desperate lol.

Yeah SPN is kind of unavoidably dark. The canon you have to play with just makes it that way.

Oh not heard of The Carnivorous Lamb. Will look it up ☺

I have to leave in a couple minutes, but I'm pretty sure I still have a DW account (just haven't used it in forever) so I will message you later if that's okay?

Yep! I mean, I find it such a fascinating relationship and honestly probably still one of my favorites even though I haven't seen the show in several years. I still have periods where I'll go and look for/read fic, but some of it is definitely darker than I (usually) prefer.

It was pretty good! I think if you liked From Beginning to End, you'd like it.

No problem, if you're happy to just DM me on dreamwidth and I'll message you on there?

I know it was totally unintentional on the creators parts but yeah, Sam and Dean do have a really interesting and intense relationship.

Thanks for the rec anon :)

Edit: I'm off to bed myself so will pick up any message tomorrow. Night, nonny.

Uh. I went and checked this one on Wikipedia out of curiosity, what it says of the plot looks to me like an adaption/transposition of L’Agneau Carnivore by Agustín Gómez-Arcos but there’s not mention of it nor credit, that’s weird. Maybe I’m imagining things..? but the born-with-his-eyes-closed-only-opens-them-for-his-brother thing is terribly specific to be just a coincidence?

This is how I feel about inappropriately large (but not illegal) age-gap ships. Like 17/18/19-year-old with 40/45/50-year-old. I'm not into fluff for those pairings at all. But I'm also not into dark, abusive stuff for them either. I just want ALL the turmoil and guilt and angst.

I enjoy fluffy incestuous undertones too. It's wildly unpopular but I enjoy it in fiction between older mothers (around 50+) and their adult sons (around 25+).
