Re: Controversial Unpopular Opinions?

It should be a cardinal sin to be boring and a waste of life to casually accept mediocrity day after day, year after year.

I feel like this is too subjective, though? I mean, people are going to have different definitions of "mediocrity".

I'm a total introvert, I don't have any grand aspirations of becoming rich or famous or anything, I just try to be a good person and do my best to have a decent life. I feel like plenty of people probably consider that "mediocre" but that's just their opinion. I don't think it should mean I'm a "waste of life".

In my many years of experience, the people who tend to say things like this tend to be the most painfully boring people in any group. Usually convinced of their own interestingness and brilliance, whilst actually just being kind of a knob.

The most interesting people and the ones least likely to fall into mediocrity are the ones who can find interest in just about anyone else. And as a result they never find others boring themselves.

What of themselves though? It's one thing to judge or not to judge others, but is it okay to accept being 'boring' and 'mediocre' for oneself, whatever the personal interpretation of those two terms may be?

NAYRT

I don't get what your point is, it just seems like you're being unnecessarily judgy. Like, who cares if someone is "boring" or "mediocre" when those can have such wildly varying definitions. To me the important things to judge people on are what kind of person they are and how they treat others. Whether or not they're "boring" or "medicore" just seem like such pointlessly weird, dumb things to even bother thinking about.

Mate, you're projecting. Read the comments again. It's about judging oneself, not others. As in, I judge myself for being boring and mediocre - I think it's wrong for me to continue being as such and need to work harder to not be boring and mediocre.

Ok, I guess I should've worded it differently, then, but my point still stands. That seems like such weird and pointless criteria to judge ANYONE on, even yourself. I mean, obviously if it's important to you, go for it, I just don't see where it gets you or how it's useful.

Cardinal sins are sins that damn oneself to unhappiness; they are bad habits and negative personality traits that hamper one's growth as a human being. Arguably, boredom and mediocrity could fall under the sin of sloth but also pride, seeing as it is pride that keeps many people from wanting to grow and be better versions of themselves.

Re: Controversial Unpopular Opinions?

(Anonymous) 2020-09-19 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
So it's a religious thing, then. I guess I didn't pay enough attention to the original wording. I'm an atheist and to me the concept of "sins" at all is stupid so I guess this is something I'm just not going to get. To me, the only real obligation anyone has is to be a decent person, treat others with kindness, and behave in a way that doesn't harm anyone else.

Like, if pride leads to you being an asshole to other people because of it, then sure, it's bad, but all this other stuff is just a meaningless distraction as far as I'm concerned, and so subjective as to be completely pointless.

Bullcrap. Even if you believe in this particular religious dogma, pride is far from the only reason someone might remain dull and uninteresting in their lives. Are you going to tar them all with the same brush?

I don't think you understand people. No one sets out to be those things. Life may force us to curb our passions, but that's hardly accepting it. The only place those labels are coming from is you.

Re: Controversial Unpopular Opinions?

(Anonymous) 2020-09-19 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
No one sets out to be it but they can and do accept it if it happens. There are boring and mediocre people in this world; myself included. And yes, many of us are aware of it and did not enough to fix it.

Re: Controversial Unpopular Opinions?

Not my experience at all.

Re: Controversial Unpopular Opinions?

(Anonymous) 2020-09-19 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
WHO CARES, though? There are far worse things someone can be than "boring" and "mediocre".

Re: Controversial Unpopular Opinions?

(Anonymous) 2020-09-19 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
For you.

For some people, having lead a boring and mediocre life is worse than death.

Re: Controversial Unpopular Opinions?

(Anonymous) 2020-09-19 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Why? You clearly feel this way are you able to tell us why?

Re: Controversial Unpopular Opinions?

DA

Ok, so you acknowledge that is true for some people and not true for others. Yet you want to make it a cardinal sin for EVERYONE. Why?

Do you want people to be unhappy because you are unhappy?

Re: Controversial Unpopular Opinions?

(Anonymous) 2020-09-20 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
And those people are pretentious, and quite often incredibly dull and mediocre.

Re: Controversial Unpopular Opinions?

(Anonymous) 2020-09-19 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
My thoughts exactly.

I used to think I was going to be "great" and that it would be the worst thing to be average. Then life kicked the crap out of me, I got diagnosed with several mental illnesses, and by the time the government accepted my application for disability, the fact that I'd gotten on disability was not a negative but a cause for tears of happy relief.

The "worst thing" is not being average or boring. It's being unrelentingly miserable; it's being well and truly powerless; it's falling through the cracks.

And, of course, from an outside perspective, the "worst thing" is being a person who is cruel and causes harm and damage to others.

Yeah, exactly. I know people hate this word, but thinking that being "boring" is the worst thing in the world is sort of privileged IMO.

This. I know my life is boring as shit, and I can think of some fun, exciting things I'd like to do, but my options are pretty limited right because, well, 1) pandemic, and 2) lack of money.

Even then, though, I'm still okay with my life on a personal level, even if it's not exciting. It works for me.

Besides that, honestly, I would KILL to have the world in general be "boring" right now. I'm fucking exhausted, we need a damn break.

AYRT I completely and 100% agree. The OP has some skewed priorities.

Lol, this

Re: Controversial Unpopular Opinions?

(Anonymous) 2020-09-19 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh well, what's one more sin? I like routine. 90% of the excitement in my life was traumatic shit and nothing anyone would chose if they could be bored instead.

I like travel, I like making things, I like learning new stuff. But between brain damage and psychological trauma I'm never gonna excel at anything.

I still wouldn't call my life a waste. Every day I'm not dead and can keep myself, my pets, and my garden alive is a victory for me.

Other people don't exist for the particular purpose of entertaining you.
