Re: Controversial Unpopular Opinions?
(Anonymous) 2020-09-19 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)However, in your post it seems like you're the one trying to tell others what they should be doing with their money. Which I disagree with on principle. But also, I think your mindset here is really irrational. You say yourself that whatever caused you to lose all your savings was a "freak occurrence" - which, by definition, is something that is deeply unlikely to happen to the same person a second time.
I definitely agree that "saving every dollar" is not a good approach to saving. Disposable income is incredibly important to quality of life in a modern society. But the way you're framing this is really all-or-nothing, and for most people it doesn't have to be. If the extra money you have every month is so limited that you literally do need to make an either-or choice between saving it all or spending it all, then I am deeply sorry. That royally sucks and I hope things get better for you in the future. But for most people, it's not an either-or situation. You can save half and spend half. You can save a quarter and spend three quarters.
As I said, if you want to have no savings, that's your business. But I disagree with the way you're framing the issue.
