I get judged a lot for being of the mind that one should spend the money they earned and not hoard it. Yo, I spent YEARS saving money only to lose it all after a freak occurrence. No, I am not going to continue saving each and every dollar; I am going to take that dollar and have fun with it because chances are, I'll be thrown into poverty again anyway by a second freak occurrence so what the fuck, let me live a little and enjoy what time I have left on this planet.

Agree. Although for people who are millenials/Gen Z in the US, saving is probably not a bad idea because social security is probably going to be completely gone by the time we're no longer working, so we're gonna need something to survive, but we might all be dead by then anyway if the political system keeps going as it is so...fuck it, I guess.

I mean, if you don't have familial dependents who could potentially be affected by your lack of a financial safety net, then I don't see why anybody should be telling you what to do with your money.

However, in your post it seems like you're the one trying to tell others what they should be doing with their money. Which I disagree with on principle. But also, I think your mindset here is really irrational. You say yourself that whatever caused you to lose all your savings was a "freak occurrence" - which, by definition, is something that is deeply unlikely to happen to the same person a second time.

I definitely agree that "saving every dollar" is not a good approach to saving. Disposable income is incredibly important to quality of life in a modern society. But the way you're framing this is really all-or-nothing, and for most people it doesn't have to be. If the extra money you have every month is so limited that you literally do need to make an either-or choice between saving it all or spending it all, then I am deeply sorry. That royally sucks and I hope things get better for you in the future. But for most people, it's not an either-or situation. You can save half and spend half. You can save a quarter and spend three quarters.

As I said, if you want to have no savings, that's your business. But I disagree with the way you're framing the issue.
