I think you can learn a lot about characters from how they interact with each other sexually. I actually really love how much characterization you can get from characters in fics that go there. And most often in the things I'm into canon doesn't go there. So it is one way of exploring characterization that canon doesn't have.

This is how I feel about it. If I'm reading fic about a ship, it's because canon didn't give me stuff about that part of the ship, and nine times out of ten "that part" happens to be the sexual side.
