I'm some weird outlier here and just offering you some perspective, I'm formerly ace, for at least 20 years, but as I got older for me personally a lot of ships gained appeal and not just for fap material, believe me. In fact, I still don't like to read PWP but I multiship. It's the emotional connections that even make the smut meaningful, and I find it a way to explore the connections the characters have.

This isn't for everyone and it shouldn't have to be, but I do think that people don't realize there are plenty of us here in the middle with a wide range of tastes.

I agree that there’s a whole spectrum. Personally, I’m 33, so, not old but also not that young, and my monoshipping has never wavered. When it comes to how I feel about my ships I’ve always kind of joked (in my own head) that I’m demi.

I’m not demi myself. I don’t want to do the sex with anyone, ever. But I’m like…a demi-shipper? Yes, I know that’s very silly, but silly or not, it’s how I roll. I’m only interested in the select few ships I “feel a connection with” lol. I can enjoy other pairings from a storytelling perspective. But there’s zero attraction to other pairings, sexually or emotionally.

It's the emotional connections that even make the smut meaningful, and I find it a way to explore the connections the characters have.

I very much agree with this. I’m just not interested in exploring the connections between most characters in that way. Only my ship.

I do regard myself as being somewhat “in the middle” with my asexuality, however, and I totally agree with the point you’re making there. I’m certainly not closed off to the possibility that my tastes in smut and shipping may change over time. I regard that as perfectly natural if it happens.

"Formerly ace" is not a thing, just like "formerly gay" isn't a thing. It's a sexuality, it doesn't just change. Maybe you realized you weren't actually asexual, but that's not the same thing as being asexual at one point and then just not being asexual anymore later.

sexuality can and in many cases is fluid, and someone changing their labsls isnt necessarily indicative of them having never been that.

*it's not always fluid, but for a lot of people it is! just because thats not your personal experience doesn't mean it's a universal truth

ayrt

The whole "sexuality is fluid" concept has always bothered me because imo it's not too far of a stretch to "it can be changed" which eventually leads to it SHOULD be changed for non-straight people. And I've seen way too many "gay person is going to 'corrupt' a straight person and 'turn them gay'" and dumb straight guys bragging that they can turn a lesbian straight that the concept of sexuality being so easily changed just bothers me.

And I get changing labels, I have myself, it's the whole "former" thing that I have an issue with. I considered myself straight until the first time I had feelings for a woman, then I considered myself bi. I don't say "I used to be straight", I say "I used to think I was straight". Maybe it seems like a dumb distinction to make, but to me it's an important one. Idk, maybe I'm not making sense.

How about you stop policing other people's sexuality, huh?

This. I can count on less than one hand the amount of smutty fics I've written (more 'cause it's just not my forte than anything else. I do like to read smut, though), and yet your reasons for liking multi-shipping are mine as well. It's great when a fandom can provide you with such varied and interesting dynamics between most, if not all, of the characters, and it's such a fun element to play around with :D.
