105: THIS. And, ya know, it bugs me that there's all this talk about choices in the books, but then she seems to say Voldy was like this all along.. So, when did he make the choice to be evil? As a baby?

110: Why do you need an excuse? Go see it by yourself.

113: I'd like the movie better if they hadn't turned in into environmental message. And the "This is not your world" thing...? Who's is it, yours?

130: A rip-off of what? It's an adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo. And, btw, have you seen it yet? It's pretty cool. (though I could do without the mecha stuff; that feels kinda pointless. Fortunately it's only in a few eps).

147: I can see what you mean. I actually wouldn't mind them as a couple (a lot more than some pairings out there), but yeah, it could turn out really badly.

155: Keep...? Doesn't something have to exist for you to "keep" it? Nice photoshopped picture, btw.

158: I feels just the opposite, frankly. I wish Jo would move on already.

162: "Women on skewers..." "Plain background becasue I couldn't find a good backdrop" That (in)famous scene from Cannibal Holocaust comes to mind... ^_^

105. Voldy always had the choice not to be a psychotic bastard. Also, he had the choice at the end to show remorse for his actions (which would have killed him, but his soul would be whole), but he refused. Basically, Voldy made a lot of failtastic choices.

195: The lady at the orphanage says he was strange even as a baby. It kind of implies that there was something wrong from minute one. Again, where is the choice? And let's not forget that this is a series that has 11-year-olds make a decision that will effect them for the rest of their life. Who's the same person at 20 that they were at 11? Hell, who's the same at 15 or 16?

I think the "strange even as a baby" comment was referring to the accidental magic he did as a child, not his mental state.

And well, it's a series about a hero's journey, so yeah, Harry had to face bigger decisions than most kids his age. I'm really kind of confused as to what decision he had to make at age 11 that affected him the rest of his life, other than things that go with the hero's journey (ie, saving the day stuff).

P.S. I love your icon. Neville ♥

When the orphanage lady said that Tom was a strange baby, she was referring to the fact that he never cried. Which really is an early sign of sociopathy, iirc. His backstory makes it seem as though he became a sociopath through a combination of genetic factors and being raised in an understaffed orphanage that just didn't have the resources to give him the individualized attention that he needed. Which makes sense to me psychologically, but I don't know why JKR presents it that way, and actually describes Voldemort as a clinical sociopath, while still insisting that he had a "choice." People who are sociopaths from infancy don't choose to be that way--something just goes wrong, and there's no cure for it.

I think the "decision" in question was the choice of which House to enter. It's weird that Jo makes such a big deal out of Harry having chosen Gryffindor over Slytherin, considering that Hagrid had been telling Harry all about the awesomeness of Gryffindor and the evil of Slytherin--Dumbledore was a Gryffindor, and so were Harry's parents, whereas all bad wizards come from Slytherin, including the guy who killed Harry's parents. How could Harry not prefer Gryffindor after hearing that? I don't see how his choice was any different from James picking Gryffindor or Draco picking Slytherin because their parents encouraged them to.

Thank you, stray_mikeneko, you've summed it up, and much better than I could have. And, yes, the choice I was talking about was the House thing. Given the way the House choices are treated like some reflection on your personality, having 11-year-olds pick them is just... wrong.

And, yeah, with everyone telling Harry how Slytherins were pretty much the scum of the Earth, of course he's gonna choose, and specifically says, "Not Slytherin".

You can't choose not to be psychotic or a bastard or feel remorse (not show it--feel it for his actions. None of those things are choices. He showed who/what he was, he didn't choose it.

I didn't mind that they changed it into an environmental message.

The plot of the 50s original doesn't really apply today. It was made during the Cold War, and issues that were important then -- like confusion about nuclear power, and going into space for the first time -- are not the same today. Likewise, the message in the original, (Don't bring your nuclear power into space, because we don't like fighting.) wouldn't be well received today.

So they "updated" it to have modern issues. The environmental crisis right now seems pretty logical to me, anyway. There have been a lot of movies lately with the same message (see: WALL-E, The Happening). I thought this movie pulled it off pretty well without being too preachy.

As for the "This is not your planet." thing, I think he was implying that he thought the planet doesn't BELONG to anyone.

Anyway, all my personal opinions. Haha.

Yes, actually, the message DOES apply today. We still have nukes, and many more countries--some of them very volatile--that have them. And we're actually going further into space than before; and have space stations... so that part applies just as well, if not moreso.

The environmental crisis right now seems pretty logical to me, anyway

According to WIki, the plot of this movie involves the idea that:

"humans shall be exterminated so the planet – with its rare ability to sustain complex life – can survive"

Yeah, that's pretty much bullshit. We can't destroy the damn planet, no matter what we do. Even if we changed the environment so WE couldn't survive on it, other lifeforms could, and the PLANET ITSELF would be just fine. So this is just a crappy argument made by people who confuse "environment" with "planet".
