Well, to each their own, of course. I think the bishie thing is kind of a nice compromise - they're masculine characters, but most of them have very prominant feminine aspects, too. It's about as close as you can get without making them totally asexual. (Likewise, what female characters there are have a distinct masculinity to them at certain times - Hungary-chan's warrior past comes to mind most prominantly)

Well true that, but I'd really rather have female characters that look ambiguously masculine than masculine looking ambiguously feminine, you know? At least then the characters would still be female...

I really wish there were just more female characters in general, or that America or UK or Japan or Germany were female, just to shake things up.

Well, I certainly see your point, and I admit, a female Germany would've be interesting. But the series isn't like that, and we can't really change that, so (shrug). What can you do, you know?

I dunno, I just tend not to notice the male-to-female ratio of anything I read/watch/write until somebody points it out to me. If a story doesn't have a lot of women, then it just doesn't have a lot of women, and really, at the end of the day, what does it matter? A person (or character) should be judged by their individual characteristics, not their gender.

It bothers me because it makes me feel excluded, as a woman. Invisible. I feel that way enough in my everyday life, I really don't need to feel that way in fandom.

Even worse is that Hetalia is about countries, not just any other random bishies. It should show some diversity in the gender ratio because those countries represent millions of different people, and half of them are female. That almost all of them are male just makes it feel like male is the "default" and woman are the other. I'd judge them on their individual characteristics, but this is Hetalia, they're countries. I don't think it should be unreasonable to want more than two of them to be women.

At the moment, I can think of five (Hungary, Vietnam, Barius, Ukraine and Belgium, I believe). Sorry, I know it's a nit-pick, I just wanted to point it out...

I'm not saying it's unreasonable, I just think it's a bit shallow. As I've said in other comments, when you actually take a look at the characters, all of them have quite distinct 'masculine' and 'feminine' aspects - some quite a bit more so than others. (coughLithuniacoughFinlandcough) If you look at the characters' "traditional gender roles" in their personalities, then what genetalia they actually have becomes, well, unneccisary. You see what I'm saying?

That still seems disproportionately few to me, especially with a cast as wide as Hetalia's...

But the thing is that they aren't neutral. Their sex, you could say, is defined, whether or not their gender is fluid. A feminine acting man is still not a woman, and isn't the same to me as a real woman... saying they're equivalent seems to be missing something vital to me. I don't want to be defined by someone who acts masculine or feminine, I want to be defined by a woman, regardless of whether she acts in a way that "befits" her gender. Does that make sense?
