I'm perhaps weird in that I look for a certain character or pairing or fandom in general and mostly hang out in the latest updates page. Sometimes I tick "completed only" because I don't want to read something that might be abandoned (I know shit happens and fic sometimes don't get completed, I've done it myself.)

Kudos is ok sometimes but as you say, it doesn't necessarily mean the best of the best. I think people with huge followings do benefit from it but then again, there's only been a very small handful of times I read a truly shockingly poor fic that had the most kudos.

I do sort by kudos sometimes because I'm in a massive fandom, but I also check the new things often to find new authors with intriguing summaries, and I always comment on those if they're good to encourage them.

I always thought that was how most people did it, honestly: searching a particular character or pairing or just browsing the latest updates.

In my smaller fandoms, I just browse everything that's been uploaded recently. In my bigger ones, I sort by character/pairing.
