My fic, shippy or not, tends to focus on male characters, but my original writing tends to focus on female ones. I think it's because the kind of narrative and characterization I prefer/am drawn to/like to work with tends to be given to male characters more often than female ones in professionally published/produced media.

Same. The character tropes I enjoy most are almost overwhelmingly male in most media, so it's not that I don't like female characters, it's that it's much, MUCH harder to find the kind I like than it is to find male versions.

When I do find female characters like that, I pretty much universally adore them. I just wish there were more.
