Seconded. It's specifically referred to as a father/daughter relationship in multiple contexts.

(Also, he bangs Buffy's mom.)

I agree. Like I can see if people ship it in a mentor/student sort of way I guess, but it's always seemed strictly platonic to me.

Also, he bangs Buffy's mom.

But like, from a shipping perspective...he bangs Buffy's mom.

He bangs the closest alternative to Buffy who is actually morally and socially acceptable for him to bang.

Not saying that's how canon intended it. It's obviously not how canon intended it. But holy god, if you're a shipper they practically gift-wrapped that shit for you.

Except the Joyce is....pretty much nothing like Buffy.

NAYRT but this wouldn't be the first time someone has gone for what's available even if it's nothing like what they want outside of a passing resemblance.

Joyce is Buffy's mom. She's plenty like Buffy. They're immediate genetic relatives.

Yeah, I can see what you're saying. (Having worn some heavily-tinted shipping goggles myself now and then, I totally understand your way of thinking. :)

I always read "Band Candy" as releasing a latent attraction to Joyce that he previously hadn't acted on because he was a father figure to Buffy, and not a latent attraction to Buffy, but that's just my take.

Yeah, I took the events of Band Candy at face value back when I was into the show. But if I shipped Buffy/Giles, it'd be like, "I took one little step, and there shippiness was."

Oh yeah, I can see that. I don't ship it, but I can see how people get there.

Thanks for being so decent about it. I should say, I totally see the other side, too. I get why it squicks people, obviously. I just think it's one of those ships where the fact that it's pretty messed up is a feature not a bug for the people who like it.

i've never watched the show so this comment isn't about the actual characters but this is ... such a super creepy line of thinking

Wait, really? You mean it's not wholesome and well-adjusted for a middle-aged adult to have sex with the mother of the teenager he wants to fuck as a poor substitute for what he actually wants? Thank god you let me know that, anon, thank you.
