The most important thing in ANY book is that it's a GOOD book. Well written, interesting and complex characters, and a compelling plot. The rest is nice to have.

Narrative consistency is obviously an important thing but there's also something to be said for just making a movie with super hot people in the charged environment of a Gothic thriller

casting Armie Hammer and Lily James is its own justification

I get why other people ship because everything gets shipped, and even blood familial relationships don't stop people from shipping characters. But this ship has always been a very much DO NOT SHIP for me. It reads way, way to much like a father/daughter relationship.

I'd rather there were some elements of feet binding practice. Mulan had her feet unbound, then wished them to be bound again near the ancestors' pond after the war ends. So her feet are bound again. That would be an interesting and close to the actual legend.
