I get why other people ship because everything gets shipped, and even blood familial relationships don't stop people from shipping characters. But this ship has always been a very much DO NOT SHIP for me. It reads way, way to much like a father/daughter relationship.

Seconded. It's specifically referred to as a father/daughter relationship in multiple contexts.

(Also, he bangs Buffy's mom.)

I agree. Like I can see if people ship it in a mentor/student sort of way I guess, but it's always seemed strictly platonic to me.

Also, he bangs Buffy's mom.

But like, from a shipping perspective...he bangs Buffy's mom.

He bangs the closest alternative to Buffy who is actually morally and socially acceptable for him to bang.

Not saying that's how canon intended it. It's obviously not how canon intended it. But holy god, if you're a shipper they practically gift-wrapped that shit for you.

Except the Joyce is....pretty much nothing like Buffy.

NAYRT but this wouldn't be the first time someone has gone for what's available even if it's nothing like what they want outside of a passing resemblance.

Joyce is Buffy's mom. She's plenty like Buffy. They're immediate genetic relatives.

Yeah, I can see what you're saying. (Having worn some heavily-tinted shipping goggles myself now and then, I totally understand your way of thinking. :)

I always read "Band Candy" as releasing a latent attraction to Joyce that he previously hadn't acted on because he was a father figure to Buffy, and not a latent attraction to Buffy, but that's just my take.

Yeah, I took the events of Band Candy at face value back when I was into the show. But if I shipped Buffy/Giles, it'd be like, "I took one little step, and there shippiness was."

i've never watched the show so this comment isn't about the actual characters but this is ... such a super creepy line of thinking

Wait, really? You mean it's not wholesome and well-adjusted for a middle-aged adult to have sex with the mother of the teenager he wants to fuck as a poor substitute for what he actually wants? Thank god you let me know that, anon, thank you.

This has me cackling! Especially with that perfect picture choice, omg.

Back when I was into Buffy, I was super grossed out by the idea of Buffy/Giles. I was 14/15 at the time, and took the canonical “he’s a father figure to her” view of their relationship. (Honestly, back then I probably would've been a bit of an anti about it.)

But all these years later? Yeah, I can see it. I can definitely see it.

Also, yeah, he is kind of low-key a father figure to her...but that doesn’t preclude it being sexual/romantic. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Whereas I thought it was potentially kind of romantic when I was 14/15, and now... eesh.

Personally, I’ve gotten into increasingly ethically complicated ships as I’ve gotten older. Pure, unproblematic ships are nice, but it feels like doing a game on easy mode when you’ve already beaten it on hard. Maybe the pendulum will swing back the other way eventually, but for now, I’m here for the super ethically complicated shit.

Also, the belief that my taste in fanfic ought to reflect my real-world ethics has subsided with age.

It's not so much an ethical stance in my case (as a fandom ship, not anything else!), it just squicks me. Everyone's milage varies...

I could read smut of it but I wouldn't ship it.

That's how it feels to me.

If it's any consolation, Giles was my fandom bicycle.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-22 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
Same here.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-21 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Giles was so hot, but he was a tough one for me, because he was kind of dadlike. I'm pretty sure I did read some Buffy/Giles back in the day, but nothing really stands out in my memory. I was more of a Spuffy fan.

[personal profile] dizzybeam 2020-09-22 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
YOU. YOU HAVE TASTE. I love Giles/Buffy.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-22 09:32 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, he WAS the sexiest person on that show, but it was very much a paternal/mentor relationship so...no.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-22 09:56 am (UTC)(link)
I like Joss Whedon properties, but one of my consistent "mehs" about them is that I never really gel with the canonical pairings. I just find them too off-center from the overall plot. They're not quite tacked on, but they're not quite integral, either. And if there's one thing I love it's a ship that's integral to the plot.

Say what you want about Buffy/Giles, but they sure would be integral to the plot, because their relationship is already at the very heart of the plot: She's a slayer and he's her watcher.

Fundamentally, this is why Buffy/Giles is the ship I'd chose. Because Giles already serves an integral purpose in the show. They didn't have to invent him for the purpose of giving Buffy a love interest, and therefore he's never extraneous.

Buffy/Giles was my entry ship to fandom. I still remember fondly some fics which I'm glad I can't go back and reread and find out how bad they really are.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-22 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
i think they love each other, very, very deeply

but for that to escalate to actual fucking? not this time
