Not true.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-21 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
What isn't true?

(Anonymous) 2020-09-21 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
That he's abusive towards dogs or teaches others to abuse them.

(Anonymous) 2020-09-21 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I don' think that he's abusive. I watched his newer eps, and he worked more with the owners, teaching them consistancy and how to channel inner 'calm energy' to help nervous dogs. He also works on socialization and "do as I do" by introducing his trained dogs the ep dog.

What does he do that's abusive?

"Dominance training" is largely bullshit that's based on debunked biological theories about wolves. What dominance training actually does is teach your dog to be afraid of you, and teach you to mistake learned helplessness for obedience.

I am very glad that Galaxy has brought such visibility to the unique needs of cats. In general, he's got good info and methods and I don't have too much bad to say about those.
Then he got licensed a line of homeopathic products. Then let his name be put on a line of cat toys which are imho rather crappy (neither of my cats will touch them). I hadn't heard of him joining up with Milan buuuut yeah. I just hope that people who see that don't try to apply Milan's methods to cats because holy shit that's a bad idea. (This is going off my knowledge of the methods Milan used when I first watched his show like a decade ago, I haven't payed attention since so maybe he's changed, I don't know.)
Anyway my opinion of Galaxy is firmly in the 'meh' category these days, and this just solidifies it.

Yeah, Galaxy is a really good behaviouralist (and works on the people more than the cats which is the problem) but the homeopathic bullshit is just...no. (I wouldn't judge cat toys by my own cats' reaction to them, though, since it's so individual what a cat will like.)

That's true about the toys. But all the toys of his I've seen have been made of materials that I wouldn't give a cat to play with--hard plastic? Weird rubbery stuff? Maybe it's gotten better more recently but back when they first came out they looked more like toys you'd give a human toddler than a cat.

Doesn't he still recommend going to a vet while using homeopathic products? I don't think he treats it as either/or; rather, he suggests a marriage between them.

I THINK, anyway, I haven't actually paid much attention to Jackson Galaxy stuff in a while.

I'll be honest, I've only come across his pages for them on his website/shop, and I don't remember reading on them anything about taking a cat to the vet. If it was there, it was down at the bottom of the page...which I didn't scroll to, and if I didn't scroll down that far, you know other people won't.

Now if he actually talks about them on his show, I wouldn't know as I haven't watched his show in years (I don't get that channel), so I don't know what he may say about the homeopathy and/or/vs vets.
imho that still doesn't excuse hawking homeopathy.

Jackson absolutely recommends and encourages people to take their cats to the vet, and to listen to the veterinarian's recommendations, even over homeopathic options. From the video's I've watched, his take seems to be 'hey, this (homeopathic stuff) can be helpful with a lot of cats, but whatever your vet says takes precedence, they know what they're doing'.

OP, I have no experience with dog training.

Can you give some examples of how he's abusive so I can understand?

(Anonymous) 2020-09-28 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Not OP but i am a professional dog trainer.

What it comes down to is most of his methods rely on basically "Guess what i want you to do and i'll hurt you until you guess right." He doesn't teach the dogs what he wants, but punishes any misstep. Which sure, gets a dog to "behave" but mostly because they are afraid to do anything. So that creates dogs who are psychologically shut down, or repressed until they blow up and bite the fuck out of the first person they feel they can "overpower" ... because they were taught that "might makes right".

When dealing with fear his usual go-to is flooding which has been known to cause PTSD. (i always make a comparison that if say you had a fear of spiders and a friend threw a tarantula on your face, or locked you in a room full of spiders crawling everywhere... you would not be less scared of spiders, but you would never trust that "friend" again ... hell there would be a big chance you would have full blown phobia after that experience)

That's the basics of his bullshit. Hope it helps you understand a bit :)
