Narrative consistency is obviously an important thing but there's also something to be said for just making a movie with super hot people in the charged environment of a Gothic thriller

casting Armie Hammer and Lily James is its own justification

IA with more hot people + gothic settings, but honestly? I'd prefer original stories, so that people who expect to see a Rebecca adaptation aren't disappointed. Like, give me more Crimson Peak and The Haunting of Hill House.

I agree that there should be more original stuff. But the reality is that Hollywood is not going to stop exploiting existing IPs for this stuff anytime soon, that's the world we live in. And I also think that, you know, the Hitchcock Rebecca isn't going away any time soon.

Also, Haunting of Hill House is, uh, not the best example of your point

The sad reality of Hollywood doesn't stop me from wanting it, though.

The Haunting of Hill House established upfront that it wasn't a straight up adaptation, but more "inspired by", so that was fine with me.

But someone who wanted a faithful adaptation would surely be equally disappointed in Haunting of Hill House as they would be in Rebecca!

I suppose, if they missed that the show doesn't pretend to be a faithful adaptation and established that upfront.

But by that logic, anyone who wants a textually faithful adaptation of Rebecca should see the casting choices and realize that it's not going to be textually faithful in the way they want, right?

You mean, like OP did?

I'm not sure what your point is, tbh. I'm not unaware of how much Hollywood loves adaptations and how they're considered lower risk than original work. It's just that even with that being the unfortunate reality, my personal preference is to see more of this genre, but original work. I'm not saying stuff like Rebecca shouldn't be made because it's not 100% faithful. I'm saying that if people enjoy this genre, then maybe they'd enjoy original work in this genre and they wouldn't be disappointed because it doesn't measure up to expectations of faithfulness.

I think we agree on all of the main points!

As far as I can tell the only thing that we're still arguing about is specifically the Haunting of Hill House TV adaptation, because you used that as an example of a good original Gothic story, and it confused me because I don't understand the distinction between the Haunting of Hill House adaptation and the Rebecca adaptation. But other than that specific thing that confused me, I think we're mostly on the same page.

I'm sorry, I thought I made it clear. For me, the distinction is that The Haunting of Hill House never claimed to be a faithful adaptation of the book. I consider it "a good gothic story" in the sense that to me, it's hot people + gothic setting, per the original comment I was responding to. It might be very loosely based upon Shirley Jackson's novel, but it's different enough (quite different, in fact) that it feels like its own thing.

I suppose I understand where you're coming from! It just seems to me that the connection is pretty inescapable, and the expectation is always going to be that it's an adaptation, when the TV adaptation has the same title as the book.

Yep. Which is why it's helpful to do what the show did, and establish upfront that it's only loosely based on the novel. IIRC, Shirley Jackson wasn't mentioned in the trailer and the trailer is quite obviously not the same plot or characters as the novel, which helps even more.

Right, but all of the derivative aspects were there for because it expected it's audience to know of the original, so it's still not a great example of something that wasn't relying on a specific expectation or audience imo.

I like the Hitchcock one except for Max frequently calling the heroine "fool" and "idiot". Um, he's supposedly in love with her?

Isn't that what he does in the book? Also, it seems sadly typical of a certain kind of mid century romance.

It's because Max... isn't really a great person, and the relationship isn't a very healthy one. He marries the narrator (who never even mentions her own name) because she's very young and innocent, a blank slate who's complete unlike his first wife. IIRC, the "you little fool" is said affectionately (insofar as it is possible to say that, affectionately) but it comes from a place where Max is older and experienced and jaded and his new wife is sheltered and mostly looking for an escape from her life as a lady's companion.
