(Anonymous) 2020-09-22 05:46 am (UTC)(link)Well, no, the book is not really sexy or not in the modern sense of the word, but it is thrilling in the Gothic romance mystery sense. And, yes, I did end up feeling bad for a lot of people in the end. But beyond the themes of obsession and guilt and manipulation that are present, one of the most interesting things, to me, was the idea of identity. The book explores how one sees oneself, how others do, how that can change, where the truth lies and the age and appearance of the second Mrs. de Winter and the differences between her and Maxim and her and Rebecca were pretty central to that. There are, of course, other ways of delving into identity if they are much closer in age and relative attractiveness, but, yes, I think you're right and they didn't bother.
