I come up with a lot of good secrets whenever I'm away from the computer, but the minute there's a "secrets you don't want to make yourself" post, I forget them all. I really should start writing them down as I get them, huh.

I hope the upcoming adaptation of Rebecca deviates from the book. The book was very atmospheric, and I give the author props for that. But I found the story…bad? It’s definitely a product of its time. The “Villainous whore victimizes her rich and powerful husband” narrative was so obvious and hollow from the get-go that I fully believed the novel would subvert a lot of those tropes in the end, and Maximilian would turn out to be the main threat/”bad guy” of the novel, but…nope! Rebecca was a villainous whore who terrorized her rich and powerful husband, and his naive lamb of a second wife is an angel and that’s that. Basically.

So yeah, I will cheer in delight if the movie rejects the book’s last quarter and does it’s own thing. Preferable something a little less “Madonna/Whore Paint By Numbers!” (I do like that the narrator is less of a naive lamb by the end, and I’d love to see the adaptation focus more heavily on that arc.)

S!B - Everyone who likes the novel is obviously going to cry foul, and I don’t really blame them. When I like a property, I want to see it adapted faithfully. I just don’t like this property. But maybe I could like it, with some heavy tweaking of the last quarter.

I find D/s scenes where the Dom bottoms and the sub tops completely unsatisfying. Subbing doesn’t feel like subbing to me if the sub is topping. Ditto the Dom bottoming.

I realize being penetrated is not inherently submissive, and being the one who penetrates is not inherently dominant. But my Id doesn’t see it that way.

I've gained a lot of weight since April thanks to stress eating and I've been trying to exercise more, but I hate pretty much everything I've tried. I had a BTS playlist on today and was dancing around trying to mimic the moves in the music videos the way I usually do and had the dumbest lightbulb moment because dancing is exercise and trying to copy the boys' moves is a form of exercise, so why not do it? I dunno if I'll actually lose any weight, but I'm sweating and not hating it, so here's hoping it works.

For the first time in over 20 years I've found myself shipping an OC of mine with a canon-character. It's completely ridiculous, but it's also been so nice and relaxing to fully indulge in something silly like this.

It's not like any of it is ever going to leave my head, or my PC if I ever do write anything down, so who cares?

There is currently no trend I am tired of more than describing your current aesthetic or hobby with the word '[noun]core.' I just saw a recipe post tagged as 'breadcore' and my head hurts.

I love Epic Romance. When it's implied that a character's love interest is The One? I'm here for that.

What I'm not into is when they break up and the next love interest is also The One, and the one after that, and the one after that, etc.

This is especially ridiculous when it's an adult who is otherwise intelligent.

You get one Love Of My Life. One. You're not a fucking cat.

I hate Harley Quinn and how DC is attempting to brand her as a quirky heroine. She's way too easily forgiven.

Tbh, this is a problem with comics in general. Even the worst villains get redemption with little effort.

Phoebe and Dave the science guy had the most chemistry out of any Friends pairing, and the idea that she would give up the love of her life for someone she had dumped a few months ago was my first ship induced rage

Went to the dermatologist. She thinks I am having a rosacea flare up. She gave me samples of some cream that costs $125 a tube. ;_;

Went clothes shopping for an entirely new wardrobe.

Going from a role which is all suits, cufflinks, and tie pins to one which is jeans, trainers, and t-shirts. Realised how few items of proper casual wear I've got in rotation.

As fun as dressing up is this is going to make life comfier.

I had about 2 and a half hours of meetings today which was fairly exhausting even with them being zoom meetings.

Now I'm watching University Challenge on Youtube (St John's Cambridge seems like a fun team this year) so that's nice. A very relaxing and fun show and it always feels nice to get answers right.

I went for a run this morning and noticed my clothes are fitting a bit looser, and when I got on the scale I'd lost 9 pounds! (I'm trying to lose weight to help the arthritis in my hip.) Tomorrow is weight lifting day. I'm doing an 8-week, 3-day dumbbells-only lifting program and tomorrow is the start of the 4th week. So far, so good: I'm stronger, my stamina has increased considerably, I'm feeling better and losing weight and I'm eating more healthy, too. I'm happy with all of this!

Man, I'm reading this fic, and it's honestly so poorly written.

The character who is middle aged and emotionally closed off in canon is just pouring out his feelings to his brand new e-dating buddy, with zero deepening of the relationship to justify it. Their texts to each other are just disgustingly cutesy. The other character (who is secretly the e-dating buddy) is a weepy little precious smol virgin who acts about twelve--which is a problem because he's actually 19 and the fic keeps trying to push the "They're both adults now" angle...while writing the young one like he's 12.

It's just bad on every level.

But I'm reading it anyway. Like a goat eating the felt off a pool table, because fuck it, it's there and it's green so imma eat it.

Small-fandom life has brought me low, you guys, real low.

What is your favorite gothic novel and or trope?

I just finished reading Mexican Gothic and I enjoyed it. I liked that the traditional setting wasn't used entirely (larger setting is 1950 Mexico, protagonist is a dark skinned Mexican woman with indigenous ancestry). Although in typical fashion, I wanted the handsome villain and the heroine to fuck, and she kinda did too, except she didn't.


Do you prefer classics or modern takes on the genre? Recs?
