I completely agree with the "dark" characterization of good guy characters. It genuinely makes me mad sometimes depending on the character.

Yeah, I totally get that. I'm pretty desensitized to it now because like 40% of the fics in my current fandom have a dark characterization of one, if not both, of the two mains. So my hatred for it has dimmed to just a "whatever" reaction. (Not that I ever gave anybody grief about it, even before.)

It's just not a thing I've ever understood. I get the appeal of bad boys, sometimes, but turning a hero into, say, a brutal mobster, for an AU isn't something I've ever understood the appeal of.
