What is your favorite gothic novel and or trope?

I just finished reading Mexican Gothic and I enjoyed it. I liked that the traditional setting wasn't used entirely (larger setting is 1950 Mexico, protagonist is a dark skinned Mexican woman with indigenous ancestry). Although in typical fashion, I wanted the handsome villain and the heroine to fuck, and she kinda did too, except she didn't.

Do you prefer classics or modern takes on the genre? Recs?

I love the gothic elements in Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood. Southern Ontario Gothic is apparently its own style so I should try to find more.

I know it's cliche as hell to say Dracula and The Phantom of the Opera, but gosh darn it, they're popular and beloved for a reason. There are so many amazing adaptions of both tales, be it in film, stage plays, audiobooks, et cetera.

My favorite trope in Gothic fiction is the ubiquitous 'secret corridor'! <3
