110 There's a lot of really good AU fic in that fandom and you don't have to suffer through the show to understand any of it. Or at least, I didn't, which is a good thing, because I'd never watch a single episode of that g d show.

150 I assumed the same as you did, OP, and I'm sad about how unsurprised I am at the reality of the community. Though come to think of it, the people I know who were there spent more time squeeing about Rahm than Barack. It just goes to show that even if we had canons with PoC in the lead, the slasher fangirls would just slash the minor white boys because they "just find them hotter." But then, slash has always been the sound of white men fucking.

And now I shall sit back and watch the wank.

Hey, Clio. Regarding 150, I want to respond to you about your personal concerns with the community. I will not be responding to other commenters here. If anyone else would like to discuss this with me, please feel free to message me or comment on my own LJ.

I am sorry, honestly sorry, that the community is coming across in this way to you. But I don't think it's actually an accurate depiction. You know that I am obviously going to be supportive of the community - but in this case, statistically speaking, the amount of fiction and the content of the community back me up.

There is more Rahm/Barack pairing fic on the community than there is of any other pairing. It's there to be counted. Following that, the three most popular pairings are Rahm/Stephen, Rahm/Anderson, and Rahm/Nancy, which, hey, het in a major fandom community? Wow.

I think for all those of us who are in it, there is most emphatically *not* a sense that the community is in any way ignoring anyone. We love Barack. We love Rahm. We love Nancy. We love the pundits. But there doesn't seem to be a feeling that any political figure is being deliberately excluded. There is fic for every single one of the ships represented in this secret on the community. It's not hard to find. There's not as *much* of all of it - but it's definitely not missing, as others have pointed out.

I also want to point out (not to you, necessarily, but generally) that the attention to Rahm Emanuel/various pundits does not have anything to do with people preferring to write about white guys; it specifically has to do with the real-life relationship between Rahm Emanuel and Stephen Colbert. That dynamic is what connects the pundit fandom to the white house fandom, along with the simple fact that pundits and politics are connected naturally. And even with that connection, we still write more Rahm/Barack than we do pundit fic.

And, honestly, I don't think that a community where three of our most popular ships involve a Jewish guy, an older woman, and a young black guy is doing it wrong.

I don't expect you to be anything other than supportive of the community, and I don't think that's a bad thing at all. I was expressing sadness that is more about fandom in general—heck, probably society in general—and really a sadness that even our Future Benevolent Overlord can't break through that particular glass ceiling. It isn't the responsibility of one fic comm to do that, self-consciously or otherwise. I certainly don't think y'all are "doing it wrong."

But I am sad that the 2-3-4 pairings are Rahm-centric. I know that it's about punditslash fandom, which is a considerable pile of people, esp where the holy quartet (Jon-Stephen-Anderson-Keith) is concerned. But why not slash Barack with everything that moves? And I know that this is something that's organic, and can't be controlled, and generally I don't worry about things like this because it's an exercise in frustration, believe me.

But if Barack Obama can't become the politicslash fandom bicycle, or at least the narrative prize, than what black man can?

Yeah, you absolutely have a very valid point.

It's difficult to say this because obviously there's no way to know for sure, but I think partially it's because Rahm is the character he is. He dropped into our laps as this nine-fingered tutu-wearing pundit-kissing mythic figure already primed to inhabit a fandom persona.

I think it's inevitable that a character as colorful and eccentric as Rahm is would be the inevitable (sorry I CANNOT HELP IT) Draco to Barack's Harry, and draw the fandom's attention away from him in similar ways.

What I think is more significant is that even in a fandom where all the other "characters" are competing for attention, Barack still gets as much as or more attention from us than all of them combined. Maybe it is a sign of, well. Fannish progress at least? Maybe?

(I highly endorse Barack becoming the fandom bicycle and/or narrative prize. I just needed to put that out there. )

Dropping in to say that I see your point, too (and try in my own small way to point attention to Barack, because he's why I'm in this fandom at all anyway).

And also to note that there is a very strong (if small) sub-fandom of Obama/Biden going on. And I think I've even seen Barack/Anderson. More like this pls. :)
