Random Question

(Anonymous) 2020-09-23 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Are the Doctor and the Master just Holmes and Moriarty, and furthermore, is Doctor/Master just Holmes/Moriarty

Much to consider

I think they're clearly based on their dynamic, but that they've long since out grown that inspiration.

I suppose their dynamic could be read as that, with the added "they were friends as kids" dimension. The life-long friends to enemies thing just adds fuel to the shipping fire.

When I was a kid I just always assumed The Master was essentially meant to be: what if The Doctor didn't give a shit about humanity and doing the right thing and only cared about keeping himself alive?

To be fair, Holmes and Moriarty are similar in that I think Moriarty is supposed to a similar mirror to Holmes.

Definitely. You could argue the fact The Doctor and The Master are advanced aliens adds something extra to it, then again...Holmes and Moriarty are meant to have an advanced intellect compared to most people so I suppose the capacity for a different moral code (that doesn't always align with regular people) still stands.

AYRT You know though, I can't think of another example right now, but I'm sure this is trope that extends beyond just Holmes&Moriarty and Doctor&Master.

If I remember correctly, the Master was conceived as being the Moriarty to the Doctor's Holmes, but much has changed since the Delgado Master graced our screens in 1971.
