This Must Be Fic! Inspired by #4

(Anonymous) 2020-09-26 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
What are some elements that are purely (or at least clearly identifiable as) fic?

OP mentions this, but I'm looking for examples. What could you be reading that suddenly makes you feel like this is either a fic with the serial number scrubbed off or the author has likely only ever written fic?

What are those key ingredients? What is the chemical X??? (To you?)

I can’t remember the title, but I read this YA book about two princes (or a prince and commoner) who didn’t seem to do much except bang and fight. I can’t exactly explain why, but it felt like it might have been a fic at one point or the author had been influenced by fics because there were tropes in it that I see in M/M fic (weepy uke, asshole seme, impossible-sounding sex in random places where they’re sure to get caught), but had never seen in a traditionally published work (or maybe I just don’t read enough smutty YA).

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell definitely felt like it might’ve started life as a Harry Potter fic, but that was probably intentional since it’s the fic that the MC from Fangirl is writing.
