Maybe so, maybe not. But I'd argue that "if you change a major element of a ship, then the audience would feel differently about it" is not quite the double-standard gotcha you're suggesting. Rey being a woman and the larger implications of gender dynamics and representation were, in fact, some of the reasons people were opposed to the ship. Changing the gender would probably take some of those concerns away, yes, but then it wouldn't really be the same ship, either, would it?
