Considering the amount of hate Rey herself gets, I agree. I don't ship it myself, being firmly in the Kylo/Hux camp. But hating on people for what they ship is just weird to me. Who cares? The Star Wars fandom is just in general really awful.

So, I have only watched the first movie, but I sort of got the idea Rey had a lot of agency in the ~Reylo stuff~ and that she was kind of mentally stronger than Keylo Ren?

Maybe so, maybe not. But I'd argue that "if you change a major element of a ship, then the audience would feel differently about it" is not quite the double-standard gotcha you're suggesting. Rey being a woman and the larger implications of gender dynamics and representation were, in fact, some of the reasons people were opposed to the ship. Changing the gender would probably take some of those concerns away, yes, but then it wouldn't really be the same ship, either, would it?

The whole time Force Awakens and the other star wars movie happened, I had genuinely thought that Finn and Poe were the popular ship until shit went down much later - but then again I say this as someone who likes star wars but has zero to do with the fandom beyond seeing people I follow reblogs on Tumblr.

Like on the one hand, internet misogyny absolutely played a role in the Reylo backlash. 100%. It's the same brand that's always aimed at women who like things, and this was yet another convenient target.

But on the other hand, if Rey was a boy, it simply wouldn't have been the juggernaut it ended up being, so...of course there would be less backlash? It wouldn't have been canon, and it would have had as massive a mainstream response as it did, because that's how our heteronormative society works.

Not to mention, even if it was an exact 1:1, the racism issue between "sides" would still have played a role as well, which shouldn't be overlooked.

The main reason I hate Reylo is because I'm fucking tired of the main character guy and girl forcibly having to end up together in movies like that. So yeah, if they had both been male(or female) it sure as hell would have made a difference for me because the compulsory heterosexuality would have been gone.
The current flavour of antis still would have had a problem with that ship if they had both been male, though, on account of Kylo being Kylo and the age gap.

This is 1000% true. If they were both male it would be a completely ordinary enemies-to-lovers ship, and slash fandom would eat it up with a spoon.

But because one of them is a woman, it's "abuse." Because some people believe a woman can never be equal in combat with a man, she's always a "victim." (Even if she kicks his ass pretty much every time they actually fight.) And it's grooming girls to accept abuse, blah blah blah Twilight blah blah blah, all that horseshit.

My favorite part of seeing the final movie in the theater was the universal sounds of angry or resigned disgust when they kissed. Reylos might have an annoyingly vocal presence online but the ship certainly wasn't shared by the majority of the general audience.

Yeah, because if Rey were male, Disney wouldn't have touched that ship with a 50 ft pole. I didn't care for Reylo myself, but I really didn't give much of a second thought to it until TLJ started making it canon, especially with how hard Disney was pushing Rey as a role model for little girls. Abusive and creepy dynamics in a fandom ship? Whatever, YKINMYK. In a huge, massive pop culture movie with a character being blatantly used as The Empowering Stand In for women and little girls? Maybe I'm wrong, but I think a lot of the strong anti-Reylo shit started around then too, so maybe other people shared my feelings on the matter.
